Tamari: The #1 Authentic Georgian Restaurant

Our Story

Ever since I came to America in 1995, I have wanted to open a restaurant and share the Georgian culinary tradition.

The name Tamari derives from three sources: my daughter; my grandmother, who passed her love of cooking down to me; and Queen Tamari of the 12th century, who led Georgia to peace and prosperity. These women continue to inspire me, and it was with them in mind that I opened this restaurant. We are family owned and operated, serving 100% authentic, Georgian food. We pride ourselves on serving only the freshest and highest quality food and wine.

Facts about Georgia

  • Georgia is one of the oldest wine regions in the world. Dated over 8000 years ago.
  • Georgia’s capital, Tbilisi, was founded in the 5th century.
  • Georgia is the birthplace of wine and home to over 500 indigenous grape varieties.
  • Europe’s highest settlement, Ushguli, is in Georgia at 6,900 feet.
  • Georgia has the world’s most liberal Visa Policy.

Special Events and Catering

Our restaurant is available for private events: weddings, business lunches, dinners, cocktail receptions, and more. We would love to discuss how to be a part of your next event.

Seasonal and Local

We refuse to compromise on quality in our restaurant. That’s why we source our fresh ingredients from local farmers’ markets.

Nestled in the heart of San Carlos, Tamari Restaurant is the go-to spot for a taste of authentic Georgian cuisine. Despite the outdoor dining setup, the place still oozes warmth and charm, making it the perfect spot to chill with friends or enjoy a cozy date night.

Khachapuri: The Crown Jewel of Georgian Cuisine

No Georgian “food adventure” is complete without trying the Khachapuri, the famous “Cheese Boat”: a heavenly cheese-filled bread that captures the essence of Georgian comfort food. Khachapuri is a symphony of melted cheese, butter, and pillowy dough, served fresh from the oven and topped with a golden egg. Prepare to be transported to “cheese paradise” with every bite.

Let’s talk about the stars of the show: Khinkali and Khachapuri. The Mushroom Khinkali is a flavor bomb wrapped in a soft, silky dough – it’s like a party in your mouth. And don’t get me started on the Penovani Khachapuri; it’s cheesy goodness baked to perfection.

Khinkali: Dumplings of Delight

Another beloved Georgian staple found is Khinkali, savory dumplings wrapped in soft, silky dough, bursting inside with flavorful fillings. Traditionally filled with spiced meat or mushrooms, these dumplings are carefully handcrafted, with each pleat holding a delicious surprise within. Dip them in a tangy sauce and savor the burst of flavors as you bite into the juicy filling—a true delight for the senses. For vegetarians, Tamari has the Mushroom Khinkali.

Pkhali: Vegetarian Paradise

Pkhali, a beloved dish in Georgian cuisine, captivates the senses with its vibrant flavors. Combining fresh vegetables, aromatic herbs, and ground walnuts, this gem is a celebration of Georgia’s rich culinary heritage. Each bite offers a symphony of textures and tastes, with the earthiness of the vegetables complemented by the richness of the nuts and the brightness of the herbs.

Hospitality Done Right

The owner, he’s the real MVP. He might be a bit reserved, but he’s all about making sure you have a great time. Whether it’s recommending dishes or sharing stories about Georgian culture, he’s got you covered. Plus, the service is top-notch, and the vibe is always chill – what more could you ask for?

In Conclusion: Foodie Heaven Awaits

So, if you’re on the hunt for some seriously tasty Georgian grub, look no further than Tamari Restaurant. With its laid-back atmosphere, mouthwatering dishes, and friendly vibes, it’s the perfect spot to kick back, relax, and indulge in some epic food adventures. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.

Tamari Georgian restaurant offers authentic food and homey environment despite COVID-19

by Adila Azizali, Scotscoop.com

It isn’t easy to find new places to eat, especially under new COVID-19 guidelines. There are countless restaurants, cafes, and bakeries to choose from, making it hard to know which ones are worth going to and which ones make it better just to stay home.

Tamari, an authentic Georgian cuisine restaurant in San Carlos that has recently made its opening, definitely lists in the first group. They serve traditional dishes but aren’t afraid to add their own style. Overall, it’s safe to say that Tamari is an excellent addition to the city and a fun new place to try.

“I have wanted to open a restaurant and share the Georgian culinary tradition [ever since I came to America in 1995]. Tamari derives from three sources: my daughter, my grandmother, who passed her love of cooking down to me, and Queen Tamari of the 12th century, who led Georgia to peace and prosperity,” said Shalva Dzotsenidze, the owner.

The restaurant truly lives up to its legacy. There is only outdoor dining, but sitting outside doesn’t take away from the warm, welcoming ambiance that radiates from the restaurant, the people, and the food.

My favorite dishes were the Mushroom Khinkali, Georgian Salad, and Penovani Khachapuri. My options were limited because I follow a plant-based diet, but the experience was phenomenal regardless of the food.

The wrap used for the Khinkali was soft and silky, and the shredded mushrooms, sautéed onions, and hot peppers that filled it up were immensely satisfying. Another favorite, the Khachapuri, is a delicate dough in the shape of a wide appetizer plate. There is melting cheese on top and a raw egg that cooks on the dough. Overall, it was unlike anything I had tasted before, but it was delicious.

When I was at the restaurant, I also had the pleasure of talking to Rashad Gluyev. As someone visiting from Georgia, Gluyev was familiar with its style of life and cuisine.

“Georgian’s are very warm individuals’ and are welcoming towards guests. They have many dough-based foods, and all are incredibly delicious,” Gluyev said.

Overall, Gluyev was happy with the food and was pleasantly surprised by how authentic it was.

If you want to try Tamari, they are now available for takeout and delivery from Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m to combat COVID-19. I highly recommend going; the restaurant has exceptional food and is worth every penny!

Really delicious and unusual food. We came here for the first time a few weeks ago and returned again a few days ago. We loved the cheese breads, the juicy dumplings, and the tolmas especially.

Recommend highly for anyone looking for something really high quality and different from the run of the mill.

Again, EXCELLENT! Has AUTHENTIC GEORGIAN FOOD (the Georgia that is next to Armenia in Caucuses) that is fresh and so yummy!

Service is professional and polite. ***The owner of the business is a wonderful person. He is more reserved but I prefer this when dining in a restaurant. He gives great recommendations, answers any questions, and is willing to share his culture with us. He is professional and we like this about him. We’ve sincerely enjoyed him for the past year we’ve been dining at Tamari!

Ambiance is charming — soft music, nice lighting, just wonderful. The food does take a minute to come out but this is because the food is being made fresh FROM SCRATCH in the kitchen. If you are looking for authentic, comforting Georgian cuisine or a new place-turned-favorite, MAKE YOUR RESERVATION!

The food here is really delicious and well executed. The Imeruli KHACHAPURI is so good – the bread has a great texture – like 80% pizza dough and 20% pastry with lots of cheese in the middle.

I also loved the Cornish game hen cooked in milk garlic and spices – the chicken is cooked so well – roasted first so very flavorful and tender and the sauce is unique and tasty.

Amazingly delicious meal! We loved everything that we ordered. The lamb dumplings were so juicy and tasty, the appetizer sampler had an incredible mix of flavors and textures, which paired perfectly with the traditional cheese bread. Kind, down to earth service. We will definitely be returning!

We also enjoyed the Georgian wines and also the non alcoholic cherry drink…

Went back again; just as good; got the vegetarian stew and the authentic cheese and bread dish in the form of a boat with an egg. Delicious–and co-workers agreed!

A couple notes:

Sign on the outside says “Cheese Boat“–which refers to the authentic Georgian dish we tried today. Total success; no left overs leftover lol…

I really like Georgian food and this place is really good! I have tried several of their Khachapuri and they have more regional varieties than other Georgian restaurants I’ve been to here or in New York.

They have good Kinkhali and sell them frozen as well! I also love the Pkhali! It is also cutely decorated and they are friendly and provided good wine recommendations.

I want to try to convince them to add Lobiani to their menu because that is one of my favorites and I haven’t found it outside of Georgia.
