Improv Art Meets Improv Comedy with Terry Sand at ART BIAS

June 13 @ 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Improv Art Meets Improv Comedy with Terry Sand at ART BIAS

About the event
This unique creative workshop, Improv Art Meets Improv Comedy with Terry Sand, is a free class that blends two artistic worlds into one playful experience. It runs for a duration of 2 hours, conducted entirely in English, and takes place at ART BIAS, a creative space known for supporting experimental and community-based art practices.

This is not a traditional art class or a standard improv session. Instead, it is a hybrid exploration where participants engage both body and imagination—moving between performance and visual creation in a fluid, energetic environment.

About the Event

The workshop titled Improv Art Meets Improv Comedy with Terry Sand is designed to introduce participants to two artistic genres rolled into one cohesive experience. The concept is simple but powerful: creativity thrives when boundaries are removed.

The class invites participants to join a hybrid, wacky, and playful exploration of creativity, where spontaneity is not just encouraged—it is the foundation of the entire experience. Rather than separating performance from visual art, this workshop fuses them together in real time.

The central idea behind the program is the link between improv comedy and art, which is explored as a shared creative language. Both rely on intuition, improvisation, and presence. Whether you are making a prop or performing a scene, the process is about responding in the moment and trusting your imagination.

What Participants Will Experience

In this workshop, participants are encouraged to step into both physical and artistic activity. You will not just sit and observe—you will be on your feet, actively participating in improv games that build confidence, spontaneity, and collaboration.

At the same time, you will also spend time at the table creating props, costumes, and puppets. These handmade creations are not just crafts—they become tools for storytelling and performance. The goal is to unlock imagination by combining tactile making with live expression.

The structure of the class shifts between movement-based improv exercises and hands-on artistic creation, creating a rhythm that keeps energy high and creativity flowing.

Schedule and Sessions

The workshop is offered on three separate Saturdays, each session running from 1:00 – 3:00 PM:

  • Saturday, June 13 from 1:00 – 3:00 PM at ART BIAS
  • Saturday, June 20 from 1:00 – 3:00 PM at ART BIAS
  • Saturday, June 27 from 1:00 – 3:00 PM at ART BIAS

Each session is independent, but all follow the same core structure and philosophy. Participants may join one or multiple sessions depending on availability.

The venue for all dates remains consistent at ART BIAS, providing a stable creative environment for returning and new participants alike.

Developed by Terry Sand

This hybrid experience has been developed by Terry Sand, who is currently an artist in residence in Studio #107 at ART BIAS. With decades of experience in improv comedy as both a performer and teacher, Terry brings a deeply informed and personal approach to the workshop.

Her background in theatre and performance allows her to bridge disciplines in a way that feels natural rather than forced. Participants benefit from her long-standing exploration of how movement, humor, and visual creativity intersect.

Terry’s approach reflects her belief that artistic expression is most powerful when it is playful, unstructured, and emotionally open.

The Philosophy Behind the Workshop

At the heart of this program is the idea that improv comedy and visual art share a fundamental connection: both are processes of discovery. In improv, performers build scenes without scripts. In visual art, creators build meaning through materials and forms. Both rely on trust, intuition, and willingness to fail forward.

This workshop explores that duality by encouraging participants to move between thinking and doing, planning and improvising, creating and performing.

By engaging both disciplines at once, participants are encouraged to break habitual patterns of creativity and access a more instinctive artistic voice.

A Summer Creative Experience

This workshop is designed as a way to start the summer off flexing your funny bone and igniting your sense of play. It is not only educational but also restorative, offering participants a chance to step away from routine and engage in joyful, expressive activity.

Many participants may find it functions as a creative reset—a space to reconnect with imagination in a supportive and low-pressure environment. It is described as possibly the best staycation ever, especially for those looking to do something refreshing without traveling far.

Practical Details

Each session is limited to 12 participants maximum, ensuring an intimate and focused environment where everyone can actively participate.

The workshop takes place at:
ART BIAS, Studio 114

About the Instructor

Terry Sand has an artistic mission centered on creating work that generates unexpected laughter while also releasing stress, anxiety, and emotional tension. Her goal is to create art that feels alive, liberating, and deeply human.

Her career began in San Francisco after receiving rigorous training in modern dance at UCLA, where she earned both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in the discipline. She later worked with the San Francisco Dance Theater and the SF Arts Commission.

Her transition into improv comedy came after discovering the art form through a live performance. She recognized improv as something closely aligned with modern dance in its spontaneity, timing, and physical intelligence.

She later joined the improv troupe Papaya Juice at the Holy City Zoo, continuing a vibrant performance career that included television work on People Are Talking and Evening Magazine at KPIX, the CBS affiliate in San Francisco.

Over time, she co-founded FEMPROV, an all-female improv troupe, further expanding her contributions to performance art and collaborative creativity.

Final Thoughts

Improv Art Meets Improv Comedy with Terry Sand is more than a workshop—it is a creative laboratory where performance and visual art merge. By participating, individuals are invited to experiment freely, laugh openly, and create without fear of imperfection.

Whether you are an artist, performer, or simply someone looking for a new way to explore creativity, this 2-hour experience at ART BIAS offers a rare opportunity to engage with art in its most spontaneous and joyful form.
