Hydrangeas in Pastels with Deb Shea: A Creative Journey at Art Bias
If you have ever wanted to explore the beauty of pastel painting while learning how to create vibrant and expressive floral artwork, Hydrangeas in Pastels with Deb Shea is an event worth discovering. On Saturday, September 19, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, artists of all experience levels are invited to spend three inspiring hours exploring the fundamentals of soft pastel painting at ART BIAS, 1700 Industrial Road, San Carlos, California.
This engaging three-hour workshop is designed for beginners and intermediate artists who want to strengthen their artistic skills, experiment with color, and discover new techniques for creating beautiful floral paintings.

Discover the Beauty of Soft Pastels
The Hydrangeas in Pastels with Deb Shea class takes participants on a soft pastel journey focused on the fundamentals of creating vibrant floral artwork. Hydrangeas, with their abundant petals and beautiful variations in color, provide an ideal subject for exploring the expressive possibilities of pastel.
During the class, students will learn important art concepts such as value, composition, and color. These fundamental principles are essential for creating artwork that feels balanced, dimensional, and visually engaging.
Participants will also have the opportunity to work through several stages of the painting process. From initial sketches and underpainting to layering pastel colors, the class provides a structured approach that allows students to develop their own finished floral paintings.
Whether you are picking up pastels for the first time or already have some experience with the medium, the workshop offers an opportunity to learn, experiment, and enjoy the creative process.
A Hands-On Artistic Experience
One of the highlights of this workshop is its hands-on approach. Rather than simply watching a demonstration, participants will actively work on their own pastel paintings while learning techniques that can be applied to future artwork.
The class will explore how sketches can establish the foundation of a painting, how underpainting can influence the final appearance of a piece, and how layering can create depth, texture, and richness.
Because all supplies are included, attendees can arrive ready to focus on the creative experience without having to purchase or prepare a separate collection of materials.
The class costs $110 per person and takes place at Art Bias, Studio 114, located at 1700 Industrial Road in San Carlos.
Learn from Award-Winning Artist Deborah Shea
Leading the workshop is Deborah Shea, a nationally renowned and award-winning pastel artist whose work has been exhibited in numerous local and national exhibitions.
Her recent exhibitions have included venues such as the Triton Museum, Chan Zuckerberg Community Space, and Society of West Coast Artists. She is also a regular teacher at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe, New Mexico, bringing extensive artistic and teaching experience to her workshops.
Before dedicating herself full time to studio art, Deb enjoyed a successful career in graphic design. Her background in design continues to inform her approach to composition, color, and visual storytelling.
Deb describes the natural world as a major source of inspiration. She particularly enjoys capturing the beauty of flowers by exploring the abstract shapes found within their centers and petals. For her, flowers represent energy, hope, engagement, and reinvigoration.
Her perspective makes floral painting more than an exercise in simply reproducing what we see. Instead, it becomes an opportunity to explore shape, color, emotion, and the beauty of the natural world.
An Artist with an Impressive Background
Deborah Shea earned a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art and Design from the University of California at Davis, where she studied in a summer course with celebrated artists including Ruth Asawa, Wayne Thiebaud, Roland Peterson, and Frances Butler.
She is currently pursuing her MFA at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Throughout her career, she has participated in dozens of exhibitions both locally and nationally.
Her combination of professional experience, formal education, and passion for the natural world creates an inspiring environment for students interested in developing their artistic abilities.
Part of a Monthly Pastel Journey
The September 19 workshop is more than a one-time class. Hydrangeas in Pastels with Deb Shea is part of a recurring monthly pastels class taught by Deb Shea.
Each month, the pastel journey continues with new themes, subjects, and techniques. This gives returning students the opportunity to build their skills progressively while exploring different approaches to pastel painting.
