Plant These 10 Bulbs This Fall for Carpets of Color in Spring

Plant These 10 Bulbs This Fall for Carpets of Color in Spring
As summer begins to fade and fall approaches, gardeners have an exciting opportunity to prepare for one of nature’s most beautiful seasonal displays. On Saturday, September 19, 2026, gardening enthusiasts in San Carlos are invited to discover how the right bulbs planted in fall can transform a garden into a spectacular carpet of color when spring arrives.
The special two-hour gardening event, “Plant These 10 Bulbs This Fall for Carpets of Color in Spring!”, will take place from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at LYNGSØ Garden Materials, Inc., 345 Shoreway Road, San Carlos, United States.
Whether you are an experienced gardener or someone who is just beginning to explore the joys of growing flowers, this workshop offers practical knowledge and inspiration for creating a colorful spring garden.
Why Plant Bulbs in the Fall?
Flower bulbs are an excellent way to add color, texture, and seasonal interest to a garden. They can also be relatively inexpensive compared with purchasing mature plants, making them an appealing choice for gardeners who want to create an impressive display without a large investment.
Fall is an important planting season for many spring-flowering bulbs. By planting at the appropriate time, gardeners can give bulbs the opportunity to establish themselves before winter and prepare for their spectacular emergence in spring.
During this workshop, participants will learn how to select, plant, feed, and care for bulbs so they can enjoy abundant blooms when spring arrives.
The focus will be on ten favorite bulbs that speaker Arete Nicholas considers almost foolproof. Her recommendations are based not only on gardening knowledge but also on more than four decades of hands-on experience growing and experimenting with different bulbs in her San Francisco garden.
Meet Master Gardener Arete Nicholas
The workshop will feature Arete Nicholas, an experienced Master Gardener whose passion for health, education, and gardening has shaped her work in both clinical and community settings.
Arete, pronounced “Ah ree tee,” is a Registered Nurse and a certified Master Gardener for San Mateo and San Francisco counties, a certification she has held since 2014.
From 2015 through 2017, she served as Speakers Bureau Chair and Vice President. She continues to share her knowledge through gardening workshops offered in collaboration with organizations such as the San Francisco Public Library and Community Connections, delivering programs both in person and online.
Her gardening experience extends well beyond the classroom. Arete has an award-winning garden in San Francisco’s Noe Valley neighborhood and has served for eleven years on the planning committee for the Noe Valley Annual Garden Tour.
She also created and designed plantings for the Noe Valley Town Square, a community gathering space that demonstrates how thoughtful gardening can enhance shared environments.
More Than Just Growing Flowers
Arete’s approach to gardening goes beyond simply planting flowers. She is particularly interested in educating the public about how gardens can contribute to healthier and more enjoyable lives.
Her speaking topics include California native plants, container gardening with flowers and herbs, pollinator plants, and gardening for health and well-being.
Her professional background further complements her gardening expertise. Arete earned a Master’s Degree in Gerontology as an R.N., B.S.N., from San Francisco State University, bringing together her knowledge of health, aging, education, and the natural environment.
This unique combination of experience makes the workshop an opportunity not only to learn about bulbs but also to gain insights from someone who has spent decades cultivating gardens and sharing that knowledge with others.
Get Ready for a Colorful Spring
The promise of spring begins long before the first flowers appear. By planting bulbs during the fall, gardeners can prepare now for a vibrant seasonal display months later.
At this San Carlos workshop, participants will discover which bulbs to consider, how to choose quality planting material, where to plant them, and how to provide the care they need throughout the growing cycle.
For anyone hoping to create carpets of color in spring, learning the fundamentals of bulb gardening can make a significant difference.
The event is also a wonderful chance to meet fellow gardening enthusiasts, exchange ideas, and gain practical advice from an experienced Master Gardener.
