Proposed Additional Short-Term Parking Slots in San Carlos

The City of San Carlos is launching a pilot program to address the rising need for convenient short-term parking on Laurel Street. Part of the larger Downtown Parking Study, this initiative aims to create accessible spaces for delivery drivers, rideshare services, and quick-stop customers. W-Trans has identified six spaces in the 600-800 blocks of Laurel Street and two more in City parking lots, along with 13 existing 10- to 20-minute spaces that may also serve for quick pickups. To ensure seamless implementation, the City will coordinate with delivery and rideshare companies, providing them with detailed maps. Rideshare apps like Uber and Lyft will receive geolocation data for these zones, directing drivers to the appropriate spots, while delivery apps will notify their drivers of these new parking options. Clear signage will mark these areas to improve accessibility for local businesses and customers alike.

The City plans to install time-limit signage and monitor usage closely, potentially with cameras. Mayor John Dugan suggested exploring AI and other technologies to help manage these spaces effectively, while Vice Mayor Sarah McDowwell and Council Member Pranita Venkatesh suggested traditional monitoring practices by the traffic enforcement team of San Carlos. The goal is to ensure compliance and adjust based on usage patterns, making the program smooth and efficient for all users.

Short Term Parking Pilot San Carlos CA (1)

The start date for this six-month pilot program has yet to be determined. When approved by the City Council, the program will support restaurants, shops, and elderly visitors needing easy access. Additional recommendations from the City Council include utilizing the 2nd floor of Wheeler Plaza for restaurant employees and adjusting Laurel Street’s road barricades to create new drop-off points. Community cooperation in adhering to parking guidelines is appreciated (especially those using the parking spaces at Dynasty Cleaners…).
