Devils Canyon Brewing Co: Renowned Brewery and Event Place, San Carlos

About Devils Canyon Brewing Co

Established in 2001, Devil’s Canyon Brewing Company stands as a renowned, expansive brewery and event hub nestled in the bustling Bay Area peninsula. Family-run and dedicated to crafting sustainably-made beverages, our brewery serves as both a production facility and a vibrant gathering space. From private functions to public revelries, our tasting room, barrel room, and beer garden host a variety of events.

Over the years, we’ve proudly earned accolades such as the California “Green Business Award,” the local San Mateo “Sustainability Award,” and the esteemed “As Fresh as it Gets” recognition. Additionally, we’ve been honored as the recipient of the San Carlos “Business of the Year Award” and have clinched the Bay Area A-List People’s Choice award for “Best Beer Bar” five times. Notably, we’ve been spotlighted by Wine Enthusiast as one of the “12 Best Brewery Wedding Venues in America.”

From our origins as BREW4U to our current incarnation as Brewed for You, our cherished patrons, guests, and supporters have remained the heartbeat of our enterprise. Rooted in a humble passion for craftsmanship and sustainability, Devil’s Canyon Brewing Company has flourished into a 100% family-owned and operated, certified sustainable business, thanks to the unwavering backing of our like-minded community.

History of Devils Canyon

“If you brew it, they will come.” – Devil’s Canyon Brewing Company was founded in the spirit of making things well and making people happy.

Our founder, Chris Garrett, grew up on a feed ranch in rural New Mexico, where he learned that anything could be done, anything could be made, and nothing should be wasted. When faced with the choice to stay and work the ranch or go to college, Chris chose the latter, and in the laboratories at Menlo College in Menlo Park, CA, Chris’s passion for craft beer was born.

Post-grad, Chris worked for Big Names in Big Tech and home brewed constantly, eventually turning his hobby into a side hustle, then into a business called BREW4U. BREW4U hosted beer making classes, sold fresh draught beer to local restaurants and quickly gained a local and loyal following.

After winning first place in a major Bay Area beer competition in 2003, BREW4U became Devil’s Canyon Brewing Company, named after the canyon that runs through Belmont, CA, home to the original Devil’s Canyon brewhouse.

The brewery grew quickly; people loved the beer, restaurants couldn’t get enough, Chris left his day job in tech and his wife, Kristiann, retired from teaching so they could run the brewery full time. The Belmont brewhouse became a local hot spot for social events, the Devil’s Canyon Beer Club was created, and Beer Fridays were busy.

By the end of 2010, the Belmont facility was at capacity; event crowds were bigger and beer demand was greater, so Chris, Kristiann and the crew made plans to expand. In 2013, Devil’s Canyon relocated about two miles south of the Belmont brewery to its current location, a former Tesla research and development facility, in San Carlos, CA.

The building had good bones but needed major repairs, and outsourcing repair and reconstruction work was cost prohibitive. Almost all tear down and restoration was done by the Devil’s Canyon team, friends and Beer Club members. From rewiring electricity facility-wide to staining reclaimed redwood paneling, professionals and weekend warriors helped the Devil’s Canyon crew build the brewery and event house.

Devil’s Canyon opened in its new location in 2013. Growing the business came with tough challenges and big wins. Early on, the brewhouse set up took more time than expected and some brews needed to be made offsite. In the back of the house, meeting demand was a delicate logistical operation. In the front of the house, things were better than ever; people loved the new space. Between 2014 and 2019, we won the San Mateo County Business of the Year award, A-List Readers People’s Choice award for “Best Brewery” five years running, San Mateo County’s As Fresh As it Gets award, and became a certified sustainable business. In 2023, we were named one of Wine Enthusiast’s12 of the Best Brewery Wedding Venues in America.

We built this together with our crew, friends and fans– our community– and remain a fully independent, 100% family owned and operated, certified sustainable business. For over 22 years, we’ve experimented, built, solved, argued, laughed, cried, and celebrated together and we wouldn’t do it any other way. We love what we do, and Devil’s Canyon is Brewed For You.

We went to an event for fly fishing. Great service for drinks and the environment was really great! They had a taco truck in the back for food, and it was also delicious ! We will definitely be back!

FUN FRIDAY BEER GARDEN
I recently found this gem on a Friday night and was amazed by the outstanding staff, music, positive vibe and atmosphere. As soon as we walked in we were greeted with friendly open arms. Our lovely Bartender went above and beyond to give us samples and even locate a corn hole game for our enjoyment. Love this place!

We have been big fans of Devil’s Canyon for a long time but never had the chance to visit because they are only open on Friday. Parking can be a bit of an issue depending on when you get there.

We were greeted right away and walked into the large inside area where the bar is. There is a stage on one side and tables and couches in the area.

There is also a large outdoor area where there are usually 2-3 food trucks. Lots of options to choose from.

We ordered our beers (they have a good selection) and headed outside as we had our dogs. Well behaved kids are also allowed.

Everyone seems to be having a good time and met a lot of people and their dogs.

The restrooms are back towards where you come into the building.

We love their Scotch Ale so had to buy a pack of that

This place is massive – much larger than expected. They have delicious beer with tons of variety (multiple sours, lagers, pils, IPAs – something for everyone). We were greeted by excited staff, treated well by the folks behind the bar, and patrons were all friendly parents or dog owners or in their early thirties to mid forties. The food trucks are such a great addition to the space and the live music made the experience extra special. Truly a Friday night well spent! I can’t wait to return.

Devil’s Canyon is hands-down the best brewery to go to on the peninsula in the summer if you have a large crowd. The brewery is only open on Fridays, but the outdoor space is enormous and they have live music most Fridays and always have food trucks.

The last Friday is the month is the most busy, so if you want a smaller crowd it’s better to go one of the other Fridays. The beer selection is decent, and runs from traditional German and Czech styles to West Coast and Hazy IPAs and some specialty beers.

The signature beer is the Full Boar Scotch ale, and it’s a really great representation of the style. Sometimes it’s even in nitrogen tap, which makes this great beer even better.

Huge venue with both indoor and outdoor spaces. Great for big groups, even on a busy Friday or Saturday night.

Live music, food trucks, and other events happening! There was an open mic when I arrived.

I have been coming to Devil’s Canyon since it’s very early days. I now have a toddler and still really enjoy it. My kid said “Beer Friday” before most other words. He loves it there, especially the arcade room, the dancing, and looking for Beer Kitty (RIP).

We are still learning to follow the rules (no running!), but I so appreciate that this is a safe place for me to bring my kid and that people look out for each other. The staff is truly awesome and the beer is excellent. Love their new cider too.

We really enjoy the live music, the people, and the atmosphere. We have held many private events there too and our guests always enjoy themselves.

We absolutely love this place and frequent it often! Great for large groups and families. They usually have great music, food trucks, and tons of people. Is very vibey for young families and is also very dog friendly! Just make sure you get there early especially on weekends

Love this place. Always a different experience in a good way. I don’t think I have ever tried anything here I didn’t like. Love this place so much that when I bought a kegerator, this was my first stop. Vibe is super chill. Root beer so bomb.

Always pick some up for the house. Food is always changing up which is plus for me since I like trying out new things

I didn’t realize this brewing ‘company’ was actually a Big space for events until recently at our holiday party. It is a huge space and they have some good beer, great staff, parking around and on the street and… also have WINE for the Non-Beer drinkers.. so that was really amazing.

I am not a beer person but occasionally can take a glass of the pale ale or fruity ones or seltzer’s or the Chocolate crumbl beer that this place has which doesn’t taste like beer at all, so Voila!!

I did try the Deadicated beer and liked it, definitely something I could drink again.

There’s about 20-25 parking spots in their premises and then you have to look for parking on the streets
