888 Ristorante Italiano : Fresh & Authentic Italian Flavors
888 Ristorante Italiano, the best Italian Restaurant In San Carlos
888 Ristorante Italiano was created from a passion for Italian cuisine that’s deep-rooted in the Maddalena family. Owner Vince Maddalena and Chef Raul learned their craft through growing up in the restaurant industry.
A Fresh Approach to Food
When it comes to cooking, we never take shortcuts. Almost all of our menu is made in-house and we keep things fresh by changing our dishes as seasons come and go.
Enjoy our intimate dining experience with a significant other, family and friends or just let us know if you have a large group and we would be happy to accommodate.
How we started
If you’ve ever enjoyed the 888 dining experience, you know it’s not like your average Bay Area Italian restaurant. Conveniently located in the heart of downtown San Carlos, 888 Ristorante Italiano brings authentic flavors of Italy to Laurel Street.
Specifically, Maddalena’s, owned by Vince’s dad for over 30 years in Palo Alto. When Vince’s dad closed the shop, Vince knew he wanted to continue sharing his passion for food with the public. And so 888 was born!

Nicely appointed small venue on a quieter block of Laurel St. The inside looks beautiful, but we are still preferring outdoor for Covid. The staff were delightful and remembered my request for proximity to a heater, which I appreciate.
We enjoyed the beet salad, which they kindly split for us, and the brussels sprouts to which the Roquefort cheese was a tasteful addition. The gnocchi were light and delicate, perfectly laced with a the thin tomato basil sauce and fresh Parm.
A glass of Chianti was a nice accompaniment. Also available by the glass was a Sangiovese, and hopefully additional offerings will follow, to earn true Wine Bar status. Staff were kind and attentive. A lovely meal!

Party of 6 for a 5:30pm reservation. The owner moved us inside, as it was windy on mothers’ day. The bread with olive oil/balsamic was nice.
We started with calamari, bruschetta, Italian beer. We ordered: lasanga, fettuccini with seafood, veal, chicken entree.
We finished with bread pudding w/vanilla ice cream, tiramisu, cheesecake and coffee. It was ALL excellent!!.
A co-worker told me about this place and it was a great recommendation.

In a word, Yum!
The complimentary bread is delicious (possibly Raymond’s?) with the olive oil and balsamic.
Started with the beet salad which was delicious with arugula and a very light dressing. I got the spring vegetable risotto and it was amazing! It was hard to stop eating it even after I was full.
Vegetables were tender crisp, the rice was soft and tender, and the pecorino and Parmesan all complimented each other beautifully.
My guy had the lamb chops which came with mashed potatoes and green beans. He said the lamb was cooked perfectly and he ate every bite. We got an order of bread pudding to go and it was delicious!

Simply awesome food. Better than many places we have been to in the area. Reminded us of the city.
Loved the bruschetta, sole was perfectly cooked, lasagna was fabulous, tiramisu was fabulous and the blood orange sorbet was delicious.
Will become one of our go to places! Oh and service was great too!

We have ordered from Restaurant 888 quite a few times during Covid lockdowns and this place never disappoints – and it is perfect for our diabetic diet.
The sole is very well cooked, just right and not overdone, in a light sauce that perfectly complements the fish. The vegetables are cooked marvelously as well and the mash is to die for (okay the mash isn’t on our diet but once in a while, right?).
When we are back to going out this is one of the places on our list that we always share, with wonderful wait staff and a great manager/owner who comes around to talk with us.

food is so good! We had baby octopus, tiramisu and prawn with light white cream and white wine. The owner is very delighted person and we had a wonderful night.
I asked for extra cheese cause their cheese is hard and flavorful which does well with everything 🙂

Ate outside, loved the grilled octopus appetizer over a bed of baby greens. Had seafood linguine, super fresh fish and the fish of the day with bright green asparagus and bok choy.
The owner served us and is very sweet and personable. This end of Laurel is a gem. Will return time and time again.

Four of us had dinner here this evening. Cesar salads are excellent; plenty of garlic and anchovy. I had spaghetti and meat balls; delicious. My wife and our friends had bronzini and prawns in a white wine sauce with vegetables. All three reported their dinners were excellent.
Gelato for dessert which had some olive oil with it and again excellent. We brought a bottle of wine and the corkage service fee is $ 20. which is standard.
The service was very good; gentleman that waited on us did a great job. This is a small and very comfortable restaurant with moderate prices. The owner and the gentleman that waited on us thanked us for our business twice.
We are very happy this restaurant is near us as we will be returning soon.

So let’s start with the most important item – other than friendly service, good food and a very nice outdoor setting – the chocolate gelato is to die for. Do not miss it.
We thoroughly enjoyed our meal. I had the Buffalo mozzarella with fresh tomato, while my husband had the beet salad (citrus dressing rated “excellent”). The bread was not as good as it should have been, but the fried tortellini was excellent.
Our main dishes included pasta with meatballs and the chicken breast with Marsala and mushrooms. Both very tasty. The coppa pistachio was disappointing but the gelato was excellent. Would definitely return.

I picked up dinner tonight and really enjoyed it. I kept it simple and ordered Mista salad and pomodoro pasta. Both were fresh and delicious. Really nice owner and employees!!
While was there, I saw a couple eating a fried appetizer, might have been calamari but smelled delicious. I might order that next time.

I have had a fabulous ‘big’ birthday and it keeps on going in that friends ask me where I want to go for a lunch or dinner. This Thursday I chose to have lunch at 888 and it really was superb.
Vince, the waiter/manager for that day, was really so professional and was patient as I tried to decide what to eat from the extensive authentic menu of options.
I chose the Chicken parmigiana and my friend chose the Salmon special and both were done beautifully. My chicken has a crispness externally and it was so lovely and moist. The accompanying leeks and vegetables for both our orders had the right flavor and not overly done but more than al dente.
We shared the dessert and I chose the cheesecake. I was happy with shared it as it was a generous piece of what appeared to be 4 delicate layers of decadence. 🙂
I will be back and I do thank Vince who waited on us with old world professionalism and competence..:-))

PLEASE SUPPORT THIS WONDERFUL RESTAURANT DURING COVID! Everything we have ordered here at 888 is delicious, flavorful and offers appropriately sized portions.
Victor offers daily specials as well; his oxtail pasta dish and octopus appetizer are the bomb. We’ve had his Caesar and beet salads, lasagna, eggplant, seafood pasta, bolognese and meatball pasta, some main courses, everything we’ve ordered is well made, perfectly seasoned.
Even his desserts i.e. homemade cheesecake, are delicious.
The chef and owner don’t skimp on the quality of ingredients and in preparing their meals We’re foodies and tend to be choosy when and where we order out and 888 is one of our favorite local Italian restaurants.
Consider ordering directly from this restaurant and pick it up yourself so they don’t have to pay the hefty delivery fee which cuts into his profit.
Please support his business so we all don’t lose this lovely restaurant in our community. He takes pride in his business and we should support him during these difficult times. Otherwise downtown San Carlos might turn into a ghost town without our fine restaurants. This business deserves our support.

If the colder days are keeping you at home and you want a truly delicious meal, pick up or have 888 deliver any of their selections.
This week we had their scrumptous fresh tomato and garlic Bruschetta, Insalata Mista with their tasty light vinaigrette dressing, grilled to perfection Lamb and the always good Capellini with grilled prawns added; accompanied by fresh sliced bread, we were felled.
Last month we had the Petrale Sole and Linguine con Vongole, so delicious. Vincenzo and team are so great, and will substitute in and out anything to make your dinner the way you want. They’re the best!

Excellent Italian restaurant. They offer daily specials and have a good regular menu. There is a good wine selection available.
The staff is outstanding and exceptionally helpful. We didn’t know that reservations were required but they were able to seat us due to us being there early. Someplace well worth visiting.

We have been coming to 888 for at least 13+ years. They always deliver very tasty dishes.
We shared the Chicken Parmesan and Rissoto. OMG, they were both amazing. I highly recommend this quaint delicious restaurant.
Vegetarian options: There is an Eggplant Parmesan dish on the menu.

I never had a favorite restaurant until a friend introduced me to 888 years ago. Vince, the owner, is a truly stand-up guy, & staff member George has been with them since the beginning.
I’ve Never had a disappointing meal & when there are dietary restrictions amongst our dining party, they have come through stellarly. Remember: ask for that crispy pancetta on the homemade soup of the day, mmmmmm nom nom nom!!
