Izzy’s Reopening brings excitement to San Carlos

Izzy’s on the Peninsula, previously known as Izzy’s of San Carlos, is set to reopen this winter after being closed for more than a year. It will be located in the same address, at 525 Skyway Road San Carlos, California 94070 (Google Maps).

Along with a redesigned 7,500-square-foot area, Izzy’s in the Peninsula will introduce a fresh menu and new outdoor and exclusive dining areas. The restaurant has been closed since June 2022 for significant renovation, and is set to reopen December 21 2023, according to their Yelp Profile (UPDATE December 23, 2023: Izzy’s will open on JANUARY 10 according to their Official Facebook Page). Just in time, Izzy’s location in San Francisco has closed for renovation up until summer of 2024, so Izzy’s in the Peninsula will cater not only to local residents but also to the whole Bay Area.

“We are excited to welcome our community back and introduce them to our stunning new space designed by GACHOT. This design continues to pay homage to the legacy, traditions, and defining pillars that have made Izzy’s a beloved establishment on the Peninsula for nearly two decades,” announced Samantha DuVall Bechtel, CEO and Managing Partner of The DuVall Family Restaurant Group.

The Grand New Space

Izzy’s Dining Room will be the main attraction of the restaurant – a place where you can enjoy the elegance of a bygone era and be seen by others. The new Dining Room will feature classic booths and flexible seating arrangements that can accommodate parties of all sizes, whether you’re looking for an intimate meal or a grand gathering.

A new feature of the restaurant is the garden, which offers a new al-fresco experience. Guests can now enjoy outdoor dinners under the lights and a stunning setting for private events. Meanwhile, the bar will be a great place for lively get-togethers or romantic nightcaps. The private booths therein are inspired by Izzy’s flagship location in the Marina, and they’re an ideal spot to impress a date or enjoy some revelry in private.

The New Menu

Under the guidance of executive chef Vincent Castillo, Izzy’s on the Peninsula will introduce new shareable appetizers alongside its renowned selection of steaks, which are sourced from Creekstone Farms and Flannery Beef. Additionally, a new selection of craft cocktails will be unveiled. While there are no photos yet of the new menu, here are some photos of Izzy’s steaks we’ve gotten to love:

History of Izzy’s

The DuVall Family Restaurant Group, which has a flagship location in San Francisco’s Marina district, was established in 1987 by renowned Bay Area restaurateur Sam DuVall.

You might be wondering where the name “Izzy” comes from. Sam DuVall was known for his involvement in San Francisco’s Barbary Coast saloon scene. Izzy Gomez, a renowned saloon keeper, played a significant role in Sam DuVall’s career. Izzy’s saloon in San Francisco’s Barbary Coast was famous for its thick steaks, vibrant clientele, and bootlegging history.

More significantly, Izzy Gomez was renowned for his grand attitude towards people from all walks of life. He was celebrated for many things, but nothing more than his legendary generosity.

Immigrating from Portugal when he was 18 years old, Izzy Gomez’s thick accent could be heard greeting all walks of life with his signature saying, “M’Fren.” Izzy’s legacy and Portuguese heritage continue to inspire many of the restaurant’s menu items to this day.
