If you’ve ever been captivated by the fluid elegance of Japanese calligraphy, here’s your chance to dive into this beautiful tradition firsthand. On Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at 5:00 PM, join us at Art Bias in San Carlos for a truly unique experience: the Japanese Calligraphy Workshop, where tradition meets creativity in an inspiring and inclusive setting.
Explore the art of shodō—the Japanese way of writing—as you engage in a hands-on workshop led by artist Yucali Seki and calligrapher Hosui Sato, visiting all the way from Ōmura City, Nagasaki, Japan. Whether you’re a beginner or have experience with brushwork, this event is designed for all levels, creating a space where participants can learn, express, and connect through this timeless art form.
During this immersive session, you’ll gain an introduction to the basics of brush technique, how to control ink flow, and how to express yourself using Kanji, Hiragana, and Katakana characters—each imbued with elegance, history, and meaning. You’ll walk away not only with new skills, but also with a deeper appreciation for the philosophical and artistic depth behind Japanese calligraphy.
Also known as Mr. Housui, Hosui Sato is a distinguished calligrapher from Ōmura City, known for his dynamic and expressive brushwork that brings characters to life. His career spans sake label design, store branding, and product packaging, as well as traditional brush pen instruction and “Jikaki” (artistic handwriting). Housui has performed live calligraphy in Tokyo, Kyushu, and at powerful cultural landmarks like Urakami Cathedral and Nagasaki Peace Park.
More than just a calligrapher, Housui is an artist in motion—his collaborations with painters, musicians, and designers showcase his passion for pushing the boundaries of tradition, breathing new life into ancient techniques. His visit to San Carlos marks a significant cultural exchange, bridging Japanese and American communities through shared artistry.
While in San Carlos, Mr. Housui will also participate in the Blossoms mural ribbon-cutting event on May 15, and perform live-action calligraphy at the San Carlos Centennial celebration on May 17, making this workshop part of a larger celebration of creativity and international friendship.
Yucali, a multidisciplinary Japanese artist based in the San Francisco Bay Area, brings a modern, fluid approach to traditional art forms. A graduate of UC Berkeley with a degree in Art and a minor in Literature, Yucali draws on Zen philosophy, world literature, nature, and Wushu (a Chinese martial art) to inform her highly personal and poetic visual language.
Deeply involved in community art initiatives, Yucali is a lead mentor for the Art Bias Creative Youth Mentorship Program, now in its third year. She’s also taught with One Step Beyond and HIP Housing, and has led mural projects across the Bay Area. Her most recent public work, the ~Blossoms~ International Friendship Mural, is a stunning collaboration with Mr. Housui, celebrating the sister cities of San Carlos and Ōmura City.
The mural, which incorporates Mr. Housui’s calligraphy, symbolizes the cultural exchange and enduring friendship between two cities across the Pacific Ocean—one ink stroke at a time.
