Artists of all levels are invited to immerse themselves in a timeless and rewarding creative practice through Figure Drawing at Art Bias. This ongoing series offers a welcoming and focused environment for artists who want to sharpen their observational skills, deepen their understanding of the human form, and enjoy the energy of drawing from a live model. Join us on the fourth Thursday of each month for ongoing Life Drawing sessions organized by Matthew Lipson, a consistent and thoughtfully curated gathering that has become a valued part of the local art community.
About This Event
The next session takes place on Thursday, January 22, 2026, at the vibrant and creative space of Art Bias in San Carlos. This is an intimate and carefully managed event, as this event is limited to 12 attendees—registration is required. Keeping the group small ensures that every participant has adequate space, comfort, and uninterrupted time to focus on their work.
Doors open at 6:30 PM, first pose at 7:00 PM, allowing artists time to settle in, set up their materials, and connect with fellow creatives before the session begins. The drawing session runs through the evening, providing a structured yet relaxed flow of poses that accommodate both quick gesture drawings and longer, more detailed studies.
A Space Designed for Focus and Creativity
Held at Studio 114 at Art Bias, 1700 Industrial Road in San Carlos, the venue offers a professional yet welcoming studio environment ideal for life drawing. Art Bias is known for supporting artists through thoughtfully designed spaces, and Studio 114 provides the lighting, layout, and atmosphere needed for focused creative work.
Parking at Art Bias and surrounding streets is available, making the event accessible and stress-free for local and visiting artists alike. The convenience of the location allows participants to arrive early, relax, and fully engage in the experience.
What to Bring and What to Expect
Participants are encouraged to bring your own supplies so they can work in their preferred medium and style. To ensure a clean and safe studio environment, dry and non-toxic materials please. Common choices include graphite, charcoal, colored pencils, and pastels, but artists are welcome to use any suitable materials that align with these guidelines.
The session is designed to be respectful, focused, and artist-centered. Whether you are practicing gesture drawing, studying anatomy, or exploring expressive mark-making, the structured poses provide a strong foundation for creative exploration. The atmosphere balances quiet concentration with a shared sense of purpose, making it equally appealing for seasoned artists and those newer to figure drawing.

Why Figure Drawing Matters
Figure drawing has long been considered a cornerstone of visual art practice. Drawing from a live model trains the eye to see proportion, balance, movement, and gesture in a way that photographs simply cannot replicate. The monthly Figure Drawing at Art Bias sessions provide artists with the rare opportunity to practice this essential skill regularly, within a supportive and consistent setting.
Beyond technical improvement, these sessions also offer something equally valuable: creative renewal. Spending a few hours fully immersed in drawing can be grounding and energizing, especially in today’s fast-paced, digital-heavy world. Artists often leave feeling both creatively fulfilled and inspired to continue developing their craft.
