Looking for a creative way to unwind after school? Join us for a fun, hands-on art session at our upcoming Crafternoon: Paper Bag Kite workshop! Happening on Thursday, May 22, 2025, from 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM at the San Carlos Library, this free event is the perfect midweek boost for young artists, curious minds, and anyone in need of some relaxing creative time.
Whether you’re into colorful crafts, clever designs, or just looking for something different to do, this Crafternoon will have you soaring—literally. So, can paper bags fly? Let’s find out together!
If you haven’t experienced a Crafternoon yet, you’re in for a treat. These casual, drop-in art sessions are designed to be fun, relaxing, and inspiring. It’s a chance for kids and families to explore their creativity with simple materials and exciting ideas. Each Crafternoon has its own unique theme. Sometimes, we focus on a specific project to highlight a featured artist, a seasonal celebration, or a cultural tradition. Other times, we offer a more free-form creative space where you can experiment with your own ideas.
No matter the theme, every Crafternoon is built around one core idea: making art should be joyful, approachable, and open to everyone.
For our May 22 session, we’re putting a breezy twist on crafting with a project that’s as fun to fly as it is to make—Paper Bag Kites!
Using simple supplies like paper lunch bags, string, colorful decorations, and a dash of creativity, we’ll guide kids in building their very own miniature kites. These whimsical creations are not just cute—they’re also capable of catching the wind with surprising ease. If you’ve never seen a paper bag take flight, you’re in for a fun surprise.
Participants will have access to a wide variety of art supplies including markers, stickers, streamers, washi tape, and more to decorate their kites however they like. Once you’ve assembled and decorated your kite, you’ll even have the chance to test it out nearby (weather permitting, of course!).
We know that school days can be busy and sometimes a little stressful. That’s why we created Crafternoon—to give kids a space to relax, unwind, and express themselves. There are no grades, no pressure, and no wrong answers—just creativity and fun.
This program is ideal for elementary-aged children, though all ages are welcome to join in the fun. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to stick around and participate too—after all, crafting together can be a wonderful way to bond and make memories.
Even if your child isn’t the “artsy” type, Crafternoon offers a low-pressure environment where everyone is free to be themselves. You might be surprised by how much fun you have once you start decorating your kite and imagining how high it can fly.
The Paper Bag Kite project is simple, budget-friendly, and full of opportunity for personalization. It’s a great way to introduce young children to basic engineering and aerodynamics without needing any prior knowledge or experience. As they assemble their kites and watch them lift into the air, kids can get hands-on experience with concepts like balance, lift, and wind power.
It’s also a wonderful example of how everyday objects—like a humble paper lunch bag—can be transformed into something joyful and unexpected. Projects like these show kids that art isn’t about having fancy supplies or perfect technique—it’s about imagination, play, and curiosity.
