The Tale of Three San Carlos Mailboxes
Gather ’round, dear residents of San Carlos, for a tale that proves even the tiniest protrusion can make a world of difference. Once upon a time, at our beloved San Carlos post office, there stood three majestic blue drive-through mailboxes, each magnificently sporting a protruding mail slot. These slots made it a breeze for postal patrons to toss letters in without ever leaving their vehicles and provided ample opportunity for daring drivers to test their side mirrors’ resilience.
Alas, rumors flew that these protruding slots were the arch-nemeses of mail security, enticing thieves with hopes of an easy mail heist. And one fateful month ago, I discovered the shocking disappearance of these splendid monuments. Imagine, if you will, my dismay as I parked, trepidatiously walked inside the post office—where mere mortals must tread—and deposited my mail through the slot in the wall. Not so inconvenient on a sunny San Carlos morning. However, during a torrent of rain it would make me sad and soggy, but at least the rain would mask my tears.
But rejoice! New mailboxes soon rose from the ashes, like phoenixes… without wings. They stood where the old ones had been, but alas, their slots, those trusted appendages, had vanished! Sending mail now demanded the great exertion of exiting one’s car and possibly risking more than just a damp sleeve. Perish the thought.
The community’s collective outcry reached the mighty ears of the USPS higher-ups. Miraculously, one mailbox was restored with its former glory—a protruding mail slot—though now with a decidedly slimmer shape, perhaps for security or to maintain the slim figure necessary in today’s slot society.
In all seriousness, for most of us, this was just a bit inconvenient, but there are many San Carlos citizens with physical disabilities or other health issues where getting out of a car and standing up is a major struggle or impossibility.
So, to the San Carlos USPS, we tip our hats (or car trunks) for heeding our cries and returning at least one of our cherished protruding slots to its rightful place. Now, how about a sequel featuring more reasonable postage rates? The plot thickens!
