San Carlos Airport
Yes, there is a San Carlos airport in San Carlos CA. It was built in 1948 by the Cooley family and pretty much looks the same as when it was built. However, at one time there was a previous San Carlos airport less than a mile from the existing one. The official airport address is 620 Airport Way, San Carlos, CA 94070 and it shares its 110 acre grounds with Hiller Aviation Museum.
The airport is operated by San Mateo County’s Department of Public Works. Its runway is 2,600 feet long and it was built to accommodate smaller aircraft and not big planes like those you see landing at SFO. Planes that weigh over 12,500 pounds cannot use San Carlos Airport. For reference, an empty Boeing 737 weighs about 150,000 pounds.
The airport does have a traffic control tower that is open 4 hours per day, 365 days per year. There are as many as 100,000 – 150,000 landings and take-offs from the airport each year. A little less than 500 aircraft reside at the airport along with some 30 businesses. The airport provides a variety of emergency services such as Air-Ambulance, Medivac flights, and law enforcement patrols. The Airport pays for itself through user fees and the businesses on site; it’s not funded by taxes.
