This 2.5-hour hands-on workshop provides the perfect introduction to pet portraiture using soft pastels. About the Event
The Intro to Pet Portraiture in Pastels is more than just an art class—it’s a journey into honoring the deep bond we share with our pets. Lory Kitamura will guide students through the process of creating a detailed and expressive pastel portrait from a photo of their pet. Whether you’re new to drawing or simply new to pastels, Lory’s supportive instruction will help you build your skills and confidence.
The class begins with a 30-minute demonstration and instruction session. Lory will explain how to select the right photo reference, block in proportions, and begin layering colors. The rest of the class will be dedicated to personalized guidance, where students receive individual feedback and help with their specific pieces.
By the end of the workshop, you’ll walk away with a deeper understanding of pastel techniques, improved compositional skills, and most importantly, a meaningful tribute to your animal companion.

What to Bring
Students are responsible for bringing their own supplies. Lory recommends one of the following high-quality pastel brands: Rembrandt, Unison, Carbothello, or Prismacolor. In addition, students should bring:
- A good reference photo of their pet (make sure it’s well-lit!)
- Pastel paper
- A kneadable eraser
For local participants, California Art Supply is the recommended store for purchasing these materials. It’s suggested to call ahead and place your order to ensure availability before the class date. Easels will be provided on-site for student use.
