National Night Out 2025: Celebrate Safer, Stronger Communities

Come and enjoy the night with us at National Night Out 2025
It’s time once again for neighbors across the country to come together in the name of community, connection, and safety. The Annual National Night Out will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2025, and if you’ve never participated before, this is the perfect year to get involved.
National Night Out is not just a single event — it’s a nationwide movement. Celebrated in thousands of communities from coast to coast, National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live.
Whether you’re a longtime resident or new to the neighborhood, National Night Out offers a fantastic opportunity to get to know the people who live nearby, strengthen local relationships, and show appreciation for the officers and first responders who work hard to keep our streets safe.
What Is National Night Out?
Started in 1984 by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW), National Night Out has grown into a beloved tradition in communities of all sizes. Held annually on the first Tuesday of August, this evening is dedicated to building connections and encouraging trust between neighbors and local law enforcement.
The goal is simple: bring people together to foster a sense of community and encourage crime prevention awareness. It’s about creating a culture where neighbors look out for one another — and where residents and public safety officials work together for the greater good.
From BBQs and potlucks to block parties, ice cream socials, and outdoor movie nights, National Night Out can look different in every neighborhood. But the spirit of the event remains the same: unity, collaboration, and connection.

Hosting Your Own National Night Out Event in San Carlos
If you live in San Carlos or the surrounding area, you’re especially encouraged to get involved this year. The city is making it easier than ever to join the celebration.
Join National Night Out by hosting your own event — it could be a cozy front yard gathering, a larger block party, or anything in between. No matter how big or small, your event will contribute to a safer, more united San Carlos.
To ensure your event is part of the official city-wide celebration, don’t forget to register your block party by visiting:
👉 cityofsancarlos.org/nno
By registering, you’ll not only help the city plan and coordinate visits from local law enforcement, but you’ll also ensure that your neighbors feel connected to the larger network of National Night Out events happening citywide.
And here’s a bonus: Public and semi-private events will receive a visit from San Mateo Sheriff’s Office representatives! That’s right — local deputies will be making their way through San Carlos neighborhoods on August 5th, stopping by registered gatherings to meet residents, answer questions, and share in the community spirit. It’s a great chance for both kids and adults to get to know the people behind the badge.
Why It Matters
In a world where we often pass by neighbors without more than a wave, National Night Out reminds us that community still matters. Knowing the people around us — and having strong relationships with local police and emergency services — can make a real difference in our everyday safety and well-being.
Events like these not only reduce isolation, they also empower neighborhoods to be proactive about crime prevention. When neighbors know each other, they are more likely to look out for suspicious activity, report concerns, and lend a hand when someone’s in need.
Police departments, like the San Mateo Sheriff’s Office, also benefit from the opportunity to connect with residents outside of emergency situations. It builds mutual respect, improves communication, and allows officers to better understand the needs of the communities they serve.
Get Involved
Whether you’re ready to host a full-scale party or just want to attend an event near you, there’s a place for everyone in this annual celebration.
Here’s how to participate:
- Host an event: Gather your neighbors and start planning. You could do a potluck, lawn games, a chalk art contest, or even an outdoor movie screening.
- Register your event: Go to cityofsancarlos.org/nno and sign up so the city and San Mateo Sheriff’s Office can include your block in their plans.
- Spread the word: Use your neighborhood email list, group chat, or social media to invite others and promote your event.
- Decorate your space: Add festive lights, banners, or signs to make your gathering fun and welcoming.
- Connect: Most importantly, use this time to engage with your neighbors and the officers who serve your community.
