Are you looking for a peaceful yet creatively stimulating activity this spring? Step into the world of Japanese flower arrangement with our upcoming Ikebana Workshop, happening Friday, May 16, 2025, from 2:00PM to 3:30PM in beautiful San Carlos. Whether you’re a curious beginner or someone with a few arrangements under your belt, this workshop is the perfect chance to immerse yourself in an ancient art form that celebrates nature, mindfulness, and simplicity.
Ikebana is not just about putting flowers in a vase—it’s an art form deeply rooted in Japanese tradition, aesthetics, and philosophy. At its core, Ikebana emphasizes minimalism and balance. It brings together branches, flowers, and leaves to create elegant and often symbolic designs that highlight artistic lines, colors, and mass.
Unlike Western floral arrangements, which often focus on abundance and symmetry, ikebana leans into the natural shapes of plants and empty space. The result is something serene and poetic—a quiet conversation between form and emptiness, between nature and human creativity.
We’re thrilled to welcome Gloria Lee as our workshop instructor. Gloria is a beloved and respected figure in the Bay Area’s ikebana community, with a wealth of experience and a passion for teaching. She has been teaching and demonstrating ikebana in the Bay Area since 2007, sharing her knowledge with students of all skill levels.
Over the years, Gloria’s striking arrangements have been featured in numerous flower shows throughout the region. Her work has even appeared at the prestigious Bouquets to Art exhibit held annually at the San Francisco De Young Museum, where top floral designers reinterpret famous artworks through their creations. Her attention to detail and deep appreciation for the traditions of ikebana shine through in every piece she creates—and in the way she teaches others to find their own artistic voice.
During this 90-minute workshop, Gloria will introduce participants to the foundational principles of ikebana. You’ll learn:
The three main elements used in ikebana arrangements
How to use space and asymmetry to create harmony
The importance of line and form over sheer volume
Basic techniques for trimming, shaping, and placing each botanical element
How to approach flower arranging as a form of personal expression and meditation
Each participant will have hands-on time to create their own arrangement using provided materials. Gloria will offer guidance and personalized tips as you work, helping you to see the beauty in simplicity and encouraging you to develop your own style.
This workshop is open to all levels of experience. Whether you’re completely new to flower arranging or have dabbled in ikebana before, you’ll find the session both educational and deeply satisfying. Gloria’s patient and thoughtful teaching style ensures that everyone walks away with both a beautiful arrangement and a greater appreciation for the art.
No prior knowledge or special tools are needed—just bring an open mind and a love for nature and design. All materials, including fresh flowers and branches, will be provided.
In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to overlook the quiet joy that comes from working with your hands and being fully present in the moment. Ikebana offers a unique way to reconnect with nature, cultivate inner calm, and express creativity.
Many who practice ikebana find it to be a meditative process. The focus required to select, cut, and place each stem with intention helps to slow down the mind and bring about a sense of clarity and peace. Plus, it’s incredibly rewarding to see how something as simple as a single branch or bloom can become a work of art.
Whether you’re looking to learn a new skill, meet fellow art and nature lovers, or simply take a break from your daily routine, our ikebana workshop offers a refreshing and enriching experience.
