Human Trafficking Awareness: A Panel to Address a Community-Wide Human Rights Crime
Human Trafficking Awareness is more than a theme—it is a call to action for communities to confront one of the most pervasive and hidden human rights violations of our time. In response to growing concerns and upcoming large-scale events in the Bay Area, local leaders and advocates are coming together for a meaningful and informative discussion. This panel to address community-wide human rights crime aims to educate, empower, and mobilize the public to better understand the realities of human and sex trafficking and how communities can respond.
About this Event
The American Association of University Women (AAUW) Mid Peninsula and San Mateo branches will present a panel on Human/Sex Trafficking. This important program is being held in direct response to 3 mega sporting events coming to the Bay Area in 2026 (beginning with SuperBowl LX at Levi Stadium)—events that historically correlate with an increase in sex and human trafficking activity. Large gatherings, increased tourism, and heightened demand often create conditions that traffickers exploit, making awareness and prevention efforts especially critical at this time.
By hosting this panel, AAUW seeks to bring visibility to an issue that often operates in the shadows, while providing community members with factual information, survivor perspectives, and practical ways to recognize and respond to trafficking.
A Powerful Panel of Experts and Advocates
The panel brings together voices from law enforcement, survivor advocacy, and nonprofit leadership, offering a comprehensive and balanced view of the issue. Three panelists include the incoming Assistant Sheriff for San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office; an author/survivor of human trafficking; and the CEO of Grateful Garment. Each panelist brings unique expertise and lived experience, creating a conversation that is both informative and deeply human.
The incoming Assistant Sheriff will provide insight into how law enforcement identifies and addresses trafficking at the local level, including challenges faced by agencies and the importance of community reporting and cooperation. Their perspective will help demystify how trafficking cases are investigated and how residents can play a role in prevention.
The author and survivor of human trafficking will share a powerful personal story that puts a human face to the crime. Survivor voices are essential in understanding how trafficking occurs, why it often goes unnoticed, and what recovery and healing can look like. This perspective fosters empathy while dispelling common myths surrounding trafficking.
The CEO of Grateful Garment will discuss how nonprofit organizations support survivors through employment, dignity, and long-term empowerment. Grateful Garment is known for providing transitional employment and wraparound support services, demonstrating how communities can move beyond awareness into meaningful action.
Why This Conversation Matters Now
Human trafficking is not a distant or abstract issue—it happens locally, often in plain sight. With major sporting events on the horizon, the urgency to educate the public increases significantly. Trafficking thrives on lack of awareness, misunderstanding, and silence. Events like this panel help replace those conditions with knowledge, vigilance, and compassion.
Community awareness is one of the most effective tools in combating trafficking. When residents understand the signs, risk factors, and realities of exploitation, they are better equipped to intervene safely, report concerns, and support survivors. This panel is designed not to sensationalize the issue, but to provide grounded, actionable information rooted in real-world experience.

Taking Awareness Beyond the Event
While a single panel cannot solve the complex issue of human trafficking, it can be a catalyst for change. Attendees are encouraged to take what they learn back into their workplaces, schools, and neighborhoods. Awareness leads to conversation, conversation leads to vigilance, and vigilance can lead to prevention and support for those affected.
The AAUW Mid Peninsula and San Mateo branches hope this event will inspire ongoing engagement and collaboration across sectors. Addressing human trafficking requires collective responsibility—law enforcement, nonprofits, educators, and community members all have a role to play.
By attending this panel, you are taking a meaningful step toward understanding a critical issue and contributing to a safer, more informed community. Human trafficking is a crime that thrives in silence, and events like this ensure that silence is replaced with awareness, action, and hope.
