The story takes place in Santa Cecilia, a Mexican town where Imelda, a young woman, marries a man who later abandons her and their daughter Coco to pursue a music career. Imelda bans music from her family and starts a shoemaking business.
Years later, Miguel, Imelda’s great-great-grandson, lives with Coco and their family. Despite the music ban, Miguel secretly idolizes the deceased musician Ernesto de la Cruz and teaches himself to play guitar.
On the Day of the Dead, Miguel accidentally breaks a frame containing a photo of Imelda and Coco’s father, revealing that Ernesto is his relative. Miguel breaks into Ernesto’s mausoleum and takes his guitar to use in a talent competition. Once he strums it, he becomes invisible to living people but can interact with his dead relatives who are visiting for the holiday. However, he must receive a family blessing to return to the Land of the Living before sunrise, or he will die.
Miguel seeks Ernesto’s blessing but learns that his true relative is Coco’s father, Héctor. Miguel must reconcile Héctor with his family and expose Ernesto’s crimes to honor Héctor’s legacy. Eventually, the family reconciles and lifts the ban on music, allowing Miguel to play for both living and dead relatives.
