Family Reading Forts for SCEF Read-a-Thon: A Cozy Weekend of Literacy and Togetherness

It’s Read-a-Thon for students in San Carlos School District, and families are invited to celebrate reading in one of the most creative and comforting ways possible. This weekend, the San Carlos Library will transform its Children’s Room into a welcoming space for imagination, learning, and connection through Family Reading Forts for SCEF Read-a-Thon. Designed to encourage children and families to read together, this special event blends literacy with play, offering a memorable experience for readers of all ages.

Reading has always been a cornerstone of education, but it becomes even more meaningful when it is shared. The Read-a-Thon gives students the opportunity to log reading hours while developing a lifelong love for books. To make the experience engaging and fun, families are encouraged to drop in anytime this weekend to the Children’s Room at San Carlos Library to construct your own reading nook. These cozy forts serve as private little worlds where stories come alive and imaginations can roam freely.

The library will provide everything needed to build the perfect reading retreat. We have blankets, boxes, cushions, and of course plenty of books for kids to add a few hours to their reading logs. Whether your child prefers picture books, chapter books, or early readers, there is something for everyone. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to join in, turning reading into a shared activity that strengthens bonds and creates positive memories around learning.

Building a reading fort is more than just fun—it fosters creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving. Children work together to design their spaces, learning how to share ideas and materials while expressing their individuality. Once the fort is complete, the magic truly begins. Get ready to get cozy and read together as families settle in, surrounded by soft cushions and warm blankets, immersed in the joy of storytelling.

Events like Family Reading Forts highlight the importance of community involvement in education. The San Carlos Library continues to be a central hub for learning, offering programs that go beyond bookshelves and into the hearts of families. By hosting this event during the Read-a-Thon, the library supports students’ academic goals while making reading feel exciting rather than obligatory.

This weekend gathering is also part of a larger celebration of togetherness and service known as San Carlos Week of the Family. Families attending the reading forts may also like the following events from San Carlos Week of the Family, each offering unique opportunities to connect, learn, and give back.

Next Friday, 23rd January, 07:00 pm, families can enjoy SCCT Presents: High School Musical Jr in San Carlos, a lively and family-friendly theatrical performance that showcases young talent and community spirit.

Later that same day, 24th January, 02:00 pm, families can join Learning Kit Assembly in San Carlos, an activity that supports education by preparing kits for students and classrooms.
