Fall Still Life in Pastels: Create a Beautiful Autumn Painting in San Carlos
Fall Still Life in Pastels: Create a Beautiful Autumn Painting in San Carlos
If you love art, flowers, seasonal colors, and hands-on creative experiences, Fall Still Life in Pastels is an event worth discovering in San Carlos this October. This welcoming art class invites participants to explore the beauty of autumn through pastels while learning fundamental artistic techniques in a relaxed studio environment.
The class takes place on Saturday, October 17, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, at ART BIAS, Studio 114, 1700 Industrial Road, San Carlos, California. Doors open at 8:45 AM, giving participants a little extra time to arrive, settle in, and prepare for a morning of creativity.
Explore the Beauty of Fall Through Pastels
The Fall Still Life in Pastels class is designed around the rich colors and natural beauty of the fall season. Participants will create their own still life painting inspired by pumpkins, leaves, mums, marigolds, and sunflowers.
These seasonal subjects provide plenty of opportunities to experiment with warm colors, interesting shapes, textures, light, and composition. Whether you are drawn to the golden tones of sunflowers, the vibrant colors of marigolds, or the familiar shapes of pumpkins, the class offers a chance to transform these natural elements into a personal work of art.
The class is suitable for beginning to intermediate artists, making it an approachable experience even for people who are relatively new to pastel painting.
Learn the Fundamentals of Pastel Painting
Participants will learn important art concepts that can help strengthen their overall understanding of painting. The class will introduce basic artistic terms and techniques, including value, composition, and color.
Students will begin with sketches before progressing through underpainting and layering. These steps are important in developing a successful pastel artwork because they help establish structure, depth, color relationships, and visual balance.
Learning how to build a painting layer by layer can also give participants greater confidence when approaching future artistic projects. Rather than simply following a finished example, students will have the opportunity to understand the process behind creating a still life.
Best of all, all supplies are included, so participants can focus on learning and creating without having to purchase or bring a complete collection of art materials.
A Monthly Pastel Painting Experience
One of the highlights of this event is that it is part of a recurring monthly pastels class taught by Deb Shea. Each month introduces a new theme and different techniques, allowing participants to continue developing their skills over time.
For people who enjoy creative hobbies, this recurring format can be an excellent way to make art a regular part of their lives. Returning students can gradually build their confidence and artistic abilities while exploring new subjects and approaches.
It can also be a wonderful opportunity to meet other people who share an interest in painting and the visual arts.
Meet Award-Winning Artist Deborah Shea
The class is taught by Deborah Shea, a nationally renowned and award-winning pastel artist whose work has been exhibited in numerous local and national exhibitions.
Her recent exhibitions have included venues such as the Triton Museum, Chan Zuckerberg Community Space, and Society of West Coast Artists. She is also a regular teacher at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Deborah began her professional career in graphic design before eventually dedicating herself full time to studio art. Her artistic inspiration comes largely from the natural world, particularly flowers and their expressive shapes.
She has described her fascination with florals and the abstract forms found within flower centers and petals. Her approach reflects an appreciation for the energy, beauty, and emotional qualities found in nature.
Deborah earned a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art and Design from the University of California at Davis, where she studied during a summer course with influential artists including Ruth Asawa, Wayne Thiebaud, Roland Peterson, and Frances Butler. She is currently pursuing her MFA at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.
With extensive exhibition and teaching experience, she brings a strong combination of professional knowledge and practical instruction to the classroom.
