The waist-high track of the Bay Area Garden Railroad Society hosts live steam locomotives, perfect for running in any backyard garden. These locomotives operate on a butane-fueled fire, boiling water to generate steam that powers the pistons, mirroring the technique used in full-size locomotives for the past 180 years. Visitors can marvel at various old-time model steam locomotives chugging along the track, emitting delightful plumes of steam as they go.

A RICH VARIETY OF RAILROADS
We are one of the oldest and the largest garden railway society in N. America. Our members have a potpourri of railroads – steam powered, track powered and battery powered – compact to extensive – complex to simple – extensively to lightly planted. Many members just enjoy other members’ railroads, including serving as part-time engineers!
AN ANNUAL OPEN RAILROAD PROGRAM
From April to October, across 10 Bay Area counties, members open their railroads for other members to enjoy. Open railroads are also a great way to learn best practices about building and operating a garden railroad.
A FEATURE PACKED MONTHLY MAGAZINE
Our 40 something page monthly digital magazine features stories and images about our railroads and how to articles covering every aspect of garden railroading from laying track to powering locos to plants that work well on railroads in the Bay Area.
A WELCOMING ENVIRONMENT
We are a friendly group. Some members have been with us for 30+ years, many for just a year or 2. Some are families, some individuals. Some are building their first railroad, while others are nationally recognized modelers. Still others have no plans to build a garden railroad; they are happy just enjoying our 125+ railroads.
New members are warmly welcomed and are the recipients of as much advice about garden railroading as they can absorb!
AND MORE
‘Swap Meets’ are an opportunity to acquire equipment at great prices. A very active ‘Live Steam’ group welcomes members interested in running live steam locos. An annual meeting features how-to clinics. Opportunities to meet other members that live near you are facilitated via 7 ‘BAGRS Areas’.
