About Yucali: A Meditation on Movement and Harmony
Yucali, a celebrated artist based in the San Francisco Bay Area, draws inspiration from her upbringing in Japan and her extensive travels across Europe and Asia. Her background is deeply intertwined with the philosophies of Zen and the fluidity of movement. Yucali’s work serves as a meditation on movement, balance, and the harmonious connection between nature and human experience.
Having earned her degree in Practice of Art from UC Berkeley, where she received the prestigious departmental citation, Yucali’s artistic journey is an exploration of cultural influences, personal experiences, and the powerful connections between the mind, body, and the world around us. Her work incorporates a rich tapestry of inspiration, including Zen philosophy, Wushu martial arts, calligraphy, and nature. These elements converge in her captivating series such as the Zen Garden Series, Zen Quest Series, and Sakura Series.
Yucali’s artistic practices are not confined to the studio. She actively engages in community art initiatives, often teaching, mentoring, and collaborating with young artists. One of her key projects is the Art Bias Creative Youth Mentorship Program, which works with students at Sequoia High School. This program, now in its third year, pairs high school students with artists to foster creativity and personal growth.
