Art Explorer Club at Art Bias: Free Kids Art Classes in April 2026

Art Explorer: Four Sundays. Four Free Art Classes. Ages 7 to 10.
Art Bias, the nonprofit arts center at 1700 Industrial Road in San Carlos, is hosting Art Explorer Club every Sunday in April — April 5, 12, 19, and 26 — from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. The classes are free, open to kids ages 7 through 10, and led by local teaching artist Megan Afansev in Studio 114. Registration is required, so if you have a kid in that age range and a free Sunday morning, this is worth jumping on.
Thanks to support from Dragonfly Community Arts, these classes carry no cost to families. That’s not a “suggested donation” situation — it’s genuinely free.
What Kids Will Be Doing
The curriculum covers drawing, painting, collage, and mixed media over the four sessions. The approach is hands-on and designed to build creative confidence alongside actual technique. Megan Afansev runs a teaching practice that emphasizes exploration over perfection — kids aren’t being graded on proportions. The goal is to get comfortable making things and develop creative thinking that carries into other areas.
Each class runs one hour, which is a solid length for this age group: long enough to actually make something, short enough that focus holds. Studio 114 is on the first floor of Art Bias (the second floor requires stair access only, but the class is on the ground level).

About Art Bias
Art Bias is a San Carlos nonprofit that has operated since the early 1990s. The building at 1700 Industrial Road houses working artist studios, gallery space, and community programs. It’s not a weekend-only facility — working artists rent studios there year-round, which gives the building the lived-in energy of a real creative workspace rather than a converted community center.
The First Sundays Open Studios event happens on the first Sunday of each month and gives the public a chance to walk the building and meet resident artists. April 5 — the first class date for Art Explorer Club — is also a First Sunday, so families could potentially combine a class drop-off with a browse through open studios elsewhere in the building.
