San Carlos is gearing up for a significant milestone in 2025, marking the city’s Centennial Celebrations. A Centennial Committee has been established at the start of this year to organize events and projects to commemorate the city’s 100-year history. With a $1 million fund allocated for Centennial Projects, the City aims to celebrate through a variety of exciting initiatives. Some of the main ideas under discussion include a partnership with StoryCorps to record personal stories from residents, the installation of historical markers at key locations, and the creation of an official San Carlos flag.
StoryCorps, a renowned nonprofit organization that has preserved over half a million personal stories in the US since the early 2000s, may bring its mobile studio to San Carlos next year. This would give residents the chance to share their personal narratives, adding their voices to a national oral history archive. Additionally, historical markers are planned for heritage sites across the city, such as the Nathanial Brittan Party House, the Carlos Bar, or the Drake Building, to highlight their significance. These projects aim to deepen the connection between the community and its history as San Carlos reaches this important milestone.
In support of the centennial, the City Council has approved a grant program to help fund events and projects organized by local community groups. San Carlos-based 501C-registered nonprofits can apply for grants up to $30,000, and even unregistered groups can participate by partnering with a registered nonprofit sponsor. The Council welcomes the idea of organizing events, but emphasized the need for lasting projects that will benefit the City beyond the Centennial Year. One such example is tree-planting, as suggested by Vice Mayor Sara McDowell during the public meeting.
An informational Zoom meeting will be held on October 16 for those interested in applying for the grant program, with applications due by November 22, 2024. This is a fantastic opportunity for San Carlos residents and organizations to contribute to the city’s centennial celebrations. Whether through organizing events or activities, everyone is invited to participate in shaping a memorable 100-year celebration for the city.

- RSVP for Information Meeting: RSVP via email to centennial@cityofsancarlos.org by Monday, October 14. Zoom links will be sent out the following day to all registered participants.
- Information Meeting: Wednesday, October 16, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. via Zoom. The Grant Application and all applicable documents can be found at cityofsancarlos.org/centennialcommunitygrantprogram.
- Deadline Applications: Applications are due by Friday, November 22, 2024 by 5:00 p.m. Written requests for funding shall be mailed or hand delivered to the attention of Amy Newby, Parks and Recreation Director, at City Hall, 600 Elm Street, San Carlos, CA 94070 or emailed to anewby@cityofsancarlos.org
