What’s On In August: Highlights
At Burton Park & and Frank D. Harrington Park
The Annual Family Campout happens this weekend! Enjoy an overnight camping experience as a family, with your neighbors and friends: grill s’mores over a campfire, watch a movie outdoors, and participate in tons of activities from dusk till dawn. Speaking of outdoor movies, the Movies in the Park series continues on August 24, Saturday night, with “Barbie”. The next day, August 25 Sunday, Party in the Park by San Carlos Children’s Theater happens in the same place (Burton Park) – expect carnival games, food trucks, free performances, a bounce house, and more. Harringtunes happens on the same day at Frank D. Harrington Park, with local favorites The Pandemics performing while people are playing chess and checkers.
Art Bias
Art Bias is the home of every artist in San Carlos and beyond. Every month, they have regular events, such as “Art Speak Easy: Monthly Conversations about Art & Art Practice“ led by the dynamic duo Kent Manske and Nanette Wylde. On the last Thursday of each month, participate in Life Drawing Sessions organized by Matthew Lipson, where you can draw live models on set. Additionally, don’t miss the enlightening Curatorial Conversation with international curator Lance Fung and the versatile artist and author Lisa Solomon, who will discuss the powerful impact of curator-artist collaborations on the cultural landscape.
Hiller Aviation
Get ready for a day of aviation, railroading, and automotive marvels at the “Planes, Trains, and Cool Cars“ event, featuring unique aircraft, model train exhibits, and a showcase of cool cars – happening August 10. Last month’s “Happy Birds” Bird Show continues on August 14, the Bubble Bonanza on August 7 & 18, and the monthly Kid’s Carnival on August 25.
Happy Birds Show features parrots, macaws, and cockatoos performing wild and trained behaviors, while Bubble Bonanza is an interactive experience exploring the science of bubbles through various outdoor stations. Kids Carnival is an exciting day of special activities where young aviation enthusiasts can explore real aircraft, build flying models, and engage in educational games and flight simulators, sparking imaginations and dreams of flight.
Filoli
This month, on Wednesday and Thursday nights, Filoli celebrates “Summer Nights“ where visitors can enjoy strolling through gardens, sipping drinks, savoring local food truck cuisine, listening to acoustic music, and watching the sunset behind the mountains. On the same days, you may also join Filoli’s captivating two-mile guided Sunset Hikes to explore newly opened and exclusive trails and witness the tranquil beauty of the sunset and local wildlife. From August 12-16 is “Wellness Week“, featuring a variety of health and wellness activities such as yoga, tai chi, sound baths, watercolor sketching, and more.
