An Interview with Fateh Sidhu

San Carlos Life had the honor of interviewing Senior Care Specialist Fateh Sidhu, who shared valuable insights and personal experiences that help families better understand the world of senior care and assisted living. In this conversation, he answers some of the most important questions families have when navigating care options, balancing emotion with practicality, and planning for their loved ones’ futures.

A Calling Born from Family Experience

Fateh Sidhu’s journey into senior care began in a deeply personal way. “When my family needed to find care for my grandparent, we faced not only logistical challenges but also cultural ones,” Fateh Sidhu shared. “As a Punjabi family, caring for elders at home is considered a duty, and seeking help outside the home felt like we were breaking with tradition.”

During that difficult time, Fateh and his family met a placement advisor who changed everything. “They truly listened and supported us without judgment,” he recalled. “They became a compassionate guide and advocate. That experience stuck with me.”

It was a defining moment that inspired Fateh’s own path. “I realized how much families need trustworthy and understanding guidance,” he said. “With my background in healthcare and community work, I felt called to serve in this way.”

How Do Families Overcome Guilt When Choosing Senior Care?

“This is something I encounter often,” Fateh explained. “The guilt is real, especially in families where there’s a strong expectation to provide care at home. I help families reframe the situation not as ‘giving up’ on a loved one, but as doing what’s best for them.”

He emphasized that professional care can actually enhance a loved one’s life. “Assisted living isn’t about abandonment,” he said. “It’s about ensuring safety, dignity, and the right level of support. I’ve seen so many seniors thrive once they’re in a community that offers socialization, nutrition, and attentive care.”

How Do Families Navigate Disagreements About Care Decisions?

“These situations are delicate,” Fateh admitted. “I act as a neutral third party focused solely on the senior’s well-being. I bring everyone to the same table and help align the conversation around what’s best for the parent.”

“Having someone outside the family to facilitate and provide objective insights can help calm emotions and move the conversation forward productively,” he added.

How Do Families Choose Between Assisted Living, Memory Care, or In-Home Care?

“It starts with a deep understanding of their situation,” he said. “I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all solutions. I assess not only medical needs but also emotional, cultural, and financial factors.”

“For example, someone with early-stage dementia might benefit from assisted living with memory care support, while others may thrive longer with in-home care if family caregivers are available,” Fateh explained. “I walk families through the pros and cons of each path and help them think ahead: what might work now, and how needs may evolve.”

What Red Flags Should Families Look For When Choosing a Senior Care Home?

“Absolutely,” Fateh said. “Some key red flags include caregivers who seem rushed or inattentive, residents who look unengaged or poorly cared for, or strong odors in common areas. You should also be cautious if you get vague answers to questions about care plans or staffing ratios.”

He offered one final piece of advice: “The energy of the staff is huge. I always tell families to observe the interactions. Do caregivers know residents by name? Are they patient and kind? That will tell you more than brochures ever could.”

What Misunderstandings Do Families Often Have About Senior Care?

“One big misconception is that all senior living communities are like ‘nursing homes’ of the past,” he said. “That’s simply not true. Today’s senior living environments can be vibrant, social, and deeply caring places.”

He also pointed out financial misunderstandings. “People often overestimate how much Medicare or insurance will cover. Understanding the financial side of care is essential, and I help families prepare for that.”

Why Is Planning Ahead Important for Senior Care?

“Start early, before there’s a crisis,” Fateh urged. “Talk with your loved ones about their wishes and educate yourself about options. Understanding the landscape in advance gives you confidence and control when the time comes.”

He paused and added, “Planning ahead isn’t about expecting the worst; it’s about being prepared to make the best decisions under any circumstances.”

What Are the Rewards and Challenges of Working in Senior Care?

“The most rewarding part,” he smiled, “is seeing a family breathe a sigh of relief after months or even years of stress. When a senior settles into a safe, welcoming environment and the family knows they’re supported, it’s an incredible feeling.”

But the work isn’t always easy. “The hardest part is navigating crisis situations, especially when a family calls me after a fall, hospitalization, or sudden decline,” he admitted. “Emotions run high, and decisions have to be made quickly. Even in those moments, I try to be a calming presence and someone they can lean on.”

What Does a Typical Day in Fateh Sidhu’s Work Look Like?

“Every day is different,” Fateh said, “but most involve a mix of family consultations, site visits, follow-ups, and ongoing advocacy.”

He described how he starts his mornings meeting families to assess care needs: discussing medical conditions, preferences, budget, and family dynamics. “Later, I might tour care homes or assisted living communities to vet them personally,” he explained. “I spend a lot of time educating families on what to expect and supporting them during transitions.”

Behind the scenes, Fateh coordinates with providers and professionals. “I’m talking with discharge planners, care home administrators, sometimes attorneys or social workers,” he said. “I’m always advocating for the senior: making sure the chosen environment truly fits their needs and personality.”

What Real-Life Experiences Have Shaped Fateh’s Approach to Senior Care?

“One that stands out is a family I worked with whose father had frequent falls but was resistant to moving out of his home,” Fateh recalled. “The adult children were overwhelmed and hesitant to consider assisted living. After his second hospitalization in just a few months, they finally agreed to tour a small board-and-care home I recommended.”

“The moment they walked in, they felt something different,” he said. “It was a warm, home-like environment with a caring administrator who truly ‘got it.’ Seeing the father smile during the visit and hearing later that he called it ‘peaceful’ moved me deeply. The family told me they finally felt hope again.”

Why Fateh Sidhu’s Work Matters

What sets Fateh apart is his lived empathy. From navigating his own family’s care journey to guiding countless others, he brings both personal understanding and professional clarity. “At the end of the day,” he said, “my goal is to make sure every senior is safe, respected, and living with dignity. And that every family feels supported and informed along the way.”
