SUMMARY:Fun and Exciting Storytime & Crafts with Author Charlotte Cheng at The Reading Bug
DESCRIPTION:A Story About Names\, Family\, and a Very Special Sister\nOn Sunday\, March 29\, 2026 at 11 a.m.\, The Reading Bug in San Carlos is hosting a storytime and craft event with Charlotte Cheng\, author and illustrator of the brand-new picture book A Name for Sister. The event is free and open to families. Recommended for ages 3 to adult — which is to say\, if you’re a grown-up who still enjoys a good picture book\, you’re welcome here. \nA Name for Sister was published by HarperCollins in March 2026. The story follows a young girl whose family goes through the process of finding a name for her new baby sister. Along the way\, readers learn about Taiwanese naming traditions and the deeper meanings embedded in Chinese characters. It’s the kind of book that gives kids a window into a culture that may be unfamiliar\, while grounding the story in something completely universal: the anticipation of a new sibling. \nWhat Happens at the Event\nCharlotte will read from the book and take questions from the audience. After the storytime\, the event moves into a craft activity: participants will make a mobile featuring five ancient elemental spirits drawn from the book’s themes. It’s a hands-on project that ties directly to the story\, which tends to work better than a generic craft that could have been stapled onto any event. \nAbout Charlotte Cheng\nCharlotte Cheng is a Bay Area-based author and illustrator with a roster of picture books that includes Night Market Rescue\, Roar-Choo!\, and I Miss You Most. She is represented by Red Fox Literary and has taught interactive workshops at events around the world. Her background includes over two decades in educational technology — she has developed curriculum for companies including Disney\, KQED\, CodeCombat\, and Wonder Workshop. When not writing or illustrating\, she plays board games\, plays ukulele\, and conducts what sounds like a serious ongoing investigation into local boba beverages. \nA Name for Sister is illustrated by Sophie Diao and retails for $19.99. Copies will be available for purchase at The Reading Bug\, and Charlotte will be signing books after the event. \nAbout The Reading Bug\nThe Reading Bug has been a fixture of downtown San Carlos since 2010. Located at 785 Laurel Street\, it’s an independent bookstore with an enchanted-forest interior design\, a devoted staff with strong opinions about children’s literature\, and an events calendar that brings in authors at a consistent clip. The store is open Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.\, and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This event falls on a Sunday\, so the store opens at 10 and the event starts at 11 — arrive a few minutes early to browse. \nThis storytime is free to attend; buying the book is optional but appreciated by both the store and the author. \n\n \nSee other interesting events in San Carlos.
