These classes are designed to provide a safe\, inspiring space where young artists can explore their creativity\, build confidence\, and develop a deep appreciation for art and culture. \nOur weekly art classes will run every Saturday\, from 10:00 AM – 12:30 PM\, at 700 Industrial Road\, San Carlos\, CA 94070. Open to children between the ages of 7 and 12\, these sessions are the perfect opportunity for young minds to learn from some of the most talented and passionate artists around. \nA Unique Learning Experience\nArt Bias is proud to present a new program that is sure to engage young people in art and creativity. These weekly classes will be taught by professional artists\, many of whom are Art Bias residents\, bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience into each lesson. Each class will have one artist instructor and one assistant\, ensuring that children receive personalized attention as they learn and grow in their artistic journey. \nUnder the guidance of Leila Ghasempor\, an interdisciplinary artist and educator\, children will not only develop artistic skills but also discover valuable life lessons through their art. Leila has an MFA and a deep passion for connecting with children\, nurturing their artistic talents\, and guiding them as they explore their imagination. She works alongside Pettina Velez\, a skilled writer and painter\, who will assist in ensuring that the creative process is both fun and educational for the students. \nWhat Can Your Child Expect?\nIn our weekly art classes\, children will engage in hands-on projects that encourage self-expression and inspire imagination. Leila’s approach focuses on helping children create art that reflects their own unique experiences and perspectives\, while also learning techniques and methods from different artistic traditions. This quarter’s program\, running from March 15 to June 30\, will expose students to a variety of creative projects\, each designed to help them hone their skills while having fun. \nClasses will take place every Saturday for 11 weeks\, except for Saturday\, May 10\, and will focus on different art techniques and ideas\, from painting and drawing to mixed media projects and collaborative works. In this social and multicultural environment\, students will not only develop their artistic skills but will also gain a deeper appreciation for diverse cultures and perspectives. Leila’s work is rooted in themes of love\, diversity\, and sustainability\, and she brings these values into her teaching style\, ensuring that students feel encouraged and supported as they express themselves. \nA Safe\, Nurturing Environment\nSafety and comfort are always top priorities at Art Bias. Children are welcome to drop off at Art Bias every Saturday\, and we ask that they wear clothes that are suitable for getting a little paint or other materials on them—all supplies are washable! Parents can rest easy knowing that each class will be led by experienced\, professional instructors\, with a maximum of 12 students per session\, ensuring that each child receives the attention they deserve. \nTo make sure that every child feels energized and ready for their creative journey\, we ask that parents bring a snack for their child (please avoid snacks containing nuts or nut butter\, as we strive to keep the environment safe for all students). After each class\, your child will have the chance to show off their creations\, giving them the confidence to share their work and express their ideas. \nHow to Enroll\nDon’t miss out on this opportunity for your child to learn from passionate artists and engage in a creative\, inspiring experience. SUMMARY:Discover Urban Gardening with the Laurel Street Container Garden Tours This May!
DESCRIPTION:Discover Urban Gardening with the Laurel Street Container Garden Tours This May!\nAs spring comes into full bloom and the days grow longer\, there’s no better time to explore the beauty and bounty of urban gardening. If you’ve ever strolled along Laurel Street in downtown San Carlos\, you may have noticed a delightful burst of greenery tucked along the sidewalks—an inviting testament to what’s possible when a community embraces sustainable gardening in an urban space. Now\, you have the perfect opportunity to take a closer look. \n \n🌿 The Laurel Street Container Garden team will lead a tour of the gardens over two Wednesday mornings in May\, 2025! 🌿 \nThis guided tour\, offered by the dedicated team behind the Laurel Street Container Garden\, in collaboration with the UC Master Gardener Program of San Mateo and San Francisco Counties and the City of San Carlos\, promises a unique experience for anyone curious about urban gardening\, sustainability\, or simply the joys of growing fresh produce and flowers in small spaces. \nWhether you’re a seasoned gardener looking for inspiration or a beginner hoping to start your own container garden\, these tours offer a wonderful window into what’s possible with a bit of creativity\, care\, and collaboration. \nWhat You’ll Experience\nThe tours will offer participants a guided walk through the length of the container garden installations along Laurel Street. You’ll hear directly from UC Master Gardeners and volunteers who tend to the space\, learning about the types of plants grown\, seasonal strategies\, container selection\, and sustainable practices used to maintain the garden’s health and visual appeal. \nYou’ll also discover how the garden contributes to community enrichment\, education\, and even pollinator support. In particular\, tour guides will share how these gardens demonstrate principles of water conservation\, composting\, integrated pest management\, and choosing regionally appropriate plants for small-scale urban environments. \n🌿 Where to Meet\nThe tours will begin in front of Wells Fargo Bank at 632 Laurel Street\, San Carlos\, CA 94070. From this central location\, participants will be led on a walk through the garden plots\, with stops along the way to highlight specific themes and answer questions. \nPlease plan to arrive a few minutes early so the group can begin promptly at 9:30 AM. Each tour will run approximately two hours\, concluding at 11:30 AM. \n🌿 Dates and Registration\nThese enriching garden tours are being offered on two dates: \n\n\nMay 7\, 2025\, from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AMRegister here \n\n\nMay 14\, 2025\, from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AMRegister here \n\n\n🌿 Each tour is limited to eight participants and registration is required. 🌿 \nSpots will fill up quickly\, so we encourage anyone interested to sign up as soon as possible. Whether you’re dealing with limited space\, poor soil quality\, or a desire for portability and control\, container gardening offers endless possibilities. \nThe Laurel Street Container Garden demonstrates just how vibrant and productive these systems can be—even in a bustling downtown corridor. By using a variety of containers\, ranging from repurposed materials to decorative pots\, the team has transformed a public space into an educational garden that inspires residents and visitors alike. \nMeet the UC Master Gardeners\nThe UC Master Gardener Program of San Mateo and San Francisco Counties is a volunteer-driven organization committed to extending research-based knowledge and best practices in home horticulture and sustainable gardening to the public. With rigorous training and a passion for community service\, UC Master Gardeners play a vital role in projects like the Laurel Street Container Garden. \nDuring the tours\, you’ll have a chance to meet some of these passionate volunteers\, learn about their journey into gardening\, and gain insight into how the program supports community education throughout the Bay Area. \nA Collaboration That Grows Community\nThis event wouldn’t be possible without the strong partnership between the UC Master Gardener Program and the City of San Carlos\, which has supported the project with enthusiasm and resources since its inception. Together\, they’ve created more than just a garden—they’ve cultivated a space where learning\, community\, and environmental stewardship intersect. \nThe container garden stands as a living example of what communities can achieve when they invest in public green spaces\, education\, and sustainable practices. It’s a quiet revolution growing right along a busy street\, and these tours are your chance to be a part of it. \nJoin Us!\nDon’t miss this chance to immerse yourself in a living classroom right in the heart of San Carlos. His work includes images of architecture\, luxury residences\, natural and built environments\, and landscapes. Fred studied fine art and architecture at the California College of the Arts\, and structural engineering at San Jose State University\, and became a full-time professional photographer after retiring from a 20-year career in bridge design and engineering. \n“My love for photography stems from the elusive nature of capturing what is beautiful or intriguing about a scene\, and the challenges of interpreting that in a two-dimensional medium. Expressing the essential qualities of a subject requires an integration of mind and spirit that is satisfying when it succeeds\, and frustrating when it does not. It is that struggle which drives me to always look for new ways to experience\, understand and interpret my environment.” \nWebsite: https://www.fredaronphotography.com/ \n  \nZdenka Bleile\n \n“I like to share with others\, how I see places that have a special meaning to me\, or with which I have a connection. I invite my audience to look at ocean beach\, where I would love to spend afternoon or go to places I visited and love. I connect to subjects that talk to me. To communicate their stories I use drip under-paint\, color and brush strokes. Recently I embraced new direction on my creative journey. I discovered cold wax and oil technique and plunged into abstract painting. Sometimes it is pure abstraction\, sometimes the painting dictates more recognizable elements. But either way it is pure creativity. \nMajority of my paintings are created in series. I immerse myself to painting water\, ocean\, impressions from my travels\, memories from Prague\, where I grew up or in pursuit of beauty of abstraction. Each series allows me to formulate intent and work out problems it presents.” \nWebsite: https://www.zdenkasart.com/ \n  \nLiz Broekhuyse\n \nLiz Broekhuyse was born in Sydney\, Australia\, and now lives in San Carlos\, California. Since graduating from the University of Technology\, Sydney with a Bachelor of Design in Visual Communication in 2012\, Liz has worked as a professional graphic designer. Meanwhile\, she has been developing a growing body of work in art\, illustration and fashion. Her work carries the influence of her graphic design training – reflecting an interest in simplified\, flat planes of color and strong compositions. The rebellion to her graphic design training results in an interest in absurd surrealism\, touchable texture and expressive brushwork celebrating the hand of the artist. \nWebsite: https://www.lizbroekhuyse.com/index.php \n  \nEllen Brook\n \n“Art meets fashion in my original designs. What we wear can be one of the most vital art forms of daily soulful expression. Clothes can convey our creative spirit\, and allow us to shine our light in a way that reflects our mood\, enhances our groove or declares our philosophy of living. Until the age of 40\, I didn’t see myself as creative. Then something took hold. After a lifetime love of style\, I began exploring painting. Passionate about color\, fabrics\, and clothing as a means of self-expression\, I painted artwork and my own surface designs on silk. I then began transforming the fabrics into clothing and accessories. \nTo determine its visual impact\, I spend time layering the fabric with itself\, other fabrics and over garments and entire outfits. My goal is for my designs to connect with — and light up — the wearer with joy and a sense of individuality and vibrancy. As if I’ve created the piece for just that woman. My work has been called “visual poetry”. Whether the sunniest orange or the most muted neutrals\, my hope is to create a feeling of delight and delicious surprise. Once on the body\, the designs truly come to life as art.” \nWebsite: https://ellen-brook.com/ \n  \nShari Bryant\n \nMy portrait and narrative work is all about capturing the beauty of expression and form. I love getting my hands dirty with charcoal\, pastel\, and other dry mediums. My current series “Meladies: The Fantastic Black Woman” is an exploration of Black women in fantasy. \nFantasy is about escapism – imagining ourselves not as ourselves\, or indifferent settings\, beholden to different rules outside the confines of our normal realities. For too long\, Black people and people of color were excluded from this sort of storytelling in spite of our dreams of better worlds. Black fans of escapism were sold stories about futures where they didn’t exist. Or worse – where their skin represented all that was terrifying or evil in the land. \nMeladies – a portmanteau of Melanated Ladies — examines these popular tropes\, reimagining Black women fantastically in roles of beauty\, power\, and brilliance. \n  \nKaren Cox\n \n“Be bold and fearless in your art” is my motto. \nI love playing with design and color. My goal is that the viewer marvels over these in my paintings but doesn’t quite know why. I want the viewer to make their own journey\, discovering areas that move them across the board and excite them along the way. \nIt is that thrill of the dance between light\, color\, and shape that excites me to create in many media—encaustic\, oil\, acrylic\, collage and mixed being my favorites\, imagination being the catalyst. \nTake Risks. Paint with soul. \nBio: Karen Cox was a successful interior designer for over 35 years. Her love of color and design led her to pursue her passion of painting contemporary\, abstract and imaginative art. \nEmail: kcoxbox@gmail.com\nWebsite: www.karencoxart.com/\nInstagram: kcoxart \n  \nMichael Endicott\n \nMichael Endicott is an Urban Nature Impressionist photographer. Raised in the Caribbean and educated in biology and environmental law\, his photography crystalizes our entwinements with our surroundings.\n– As a fine art photographer\, Michael is always searching for objects\, shapes and shadows that have intrigue. His artistic perspective is an outgrowth of his experience in political and biological sciences.\n– The click of the shutter ignites his artistic process. The photograph itself then becomes the object of his attention.\n– His process in the digital darkroom is sculptural in nature\, bending wavelengths of light\, and molding multiple shots into one. His cellular tapestries and abstract realism leaves room for the viewer to create their own stories. Indeed\, his pieces are meditative spaces to inspire stronger connection to planet and community.\n– Recently he has been exhibited in the DeYoung Museum (2020 &2023)\, (San Francisco\, Ca)\, Gallery House (Palo Alto\, Ca) Mid-Peninsula Media Center (Palo Alto\, Ca). His work is also installed in commercial spaces in San Francisco.\n———\nHis studio is at Art Bias in San Carlos and is open for visits by appointment. Focused on natural light image capture of our environment and nature\, my pictures attempt to provide the viewer new experiences they may not have seen yet or familiar images from a new perspective. In a world of chaos and fabricated realities\, finding the true wonders of nature and joys of humanity may require some hunting . . . and when found I hope they cause you to pause and enjoy them as they do me. Above all\, the images of our world are shaped by the impact we have upon them and we should take the time and energy to celebrate them and ask how we can positively influence these same experiences for future generations. The power of photography is still its ability to capture the truth of the moment.\nEmail: alanhartphotography@gmail.com\nWebsite: alan-hart.pixels.com/\nInstagram: alanhartphotography \n  \nLindsay Hogue\n \nI have been an “artist at heart” all my life\, but really started to paint 10 years ago\, when life with grown kids allowed. Born in British Columbia\, Canada\, I grew up loving the out-of-doors\, and the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. My paintings reflect that influence\, as I love to paint landscapes and seascapes and experiment with mixed media. Each year I try to do a series of paintings based on a theme. This summer it has been painting figures. I have a studio at Art Bias at 1700 Industrial Rd. in San Carlos\, which is open to the public when artists are there. Hope you enjoy seeing them on my web-site\, or can come by and see my work.\nEmail: hoguelindsay68@gmail.com\nWebsite: www.lindsayhogue.com\nInstagram: lindsayhogue \n  \nYelena Joy\n \n  \nAnnette Legallet\n \nColor and texture dominate my abstract mixed media works. I have a background in design that influences my nature-inspired paintings. I now have an experimental approach and select final stage and orientation\nEmail: annettelegallet@gmail.com\nWebsite: ArtbyAnnetteLegallet.com \n  \nJune Levin\n \nJune’s paintings often explore the world that lies beyond the reach of her vision. Primarily a representational oil painter\, she also enjoys experimenting in a more contemporary genre\, using varied mixed media to create harmony\, texture\, and excitement. June expresses her passion of the California landscapes with bold colors and freedom of brushstroke.\nEmail: junelevin@gmail.com\nWebsite: www.junelevin.com\nInstagram: junelevin\nFacebook: Junelevin \n  \nNeil Murphy\n \nStrong colors and illumination. Yup! My Hawaiian Island upbringing makes certain of that. Shapes from nature\, themes from neurobiology and science\, add some abstraction and the geometries of Asian color fields — and you’ve got what energizes my work. \nI start an artwork with a flood of water and pigment across a horizontal unprimed canvas. Then come shapes and lines with paint and ink\, layer upon layer. Often the imagery takes a mixed media detour into the digital domain. Those ventures yield embellished prints\, collages\, and illuminated transparent multilayered glowing images. \nThe final art may be realistic representations of animals or scientifically accurate molecular structures. Perhaps you’ll see imaginary beings inhabiting fanciful abstracted landscapes. “Curious Maps of Impossible Places” is a series with its trails leading to both dead ends — and unexpected wonders. Who knows what will appear in the end? Not me! \nI’m involved in efforts to help those with mental health challenges. Unsurprisingly\, these topics are reflected in many of my artworks\, My own family has been deeply affected by these issues — not surprising as 1 in of 4 of us face these difficulties at some point in our lives. \nStudio visits are most welcome. Let me know when you’d like to stop by. My studio is located at Art Bias in San Carlos. Roughly 40 artists onsite who create all imaginable kinds of art. \nEmail: neilart7@gmail.com\nWebsite: www.neilmurphystudio.com\nInstagram: neil_murphy_art\nFacebook: neil.murphy.984 \n  \nAmy Rattner\n \nPainting is both a stepping off point into my imagination and a way to center my thoughts and feelings. Animals of all shapes and sizes have always been my passion. Each piece begins with a deep admiration of the unique beauty and character of the creature I am painting. Other sources of inspiration include an animal’s spiritual role in different tribal societies; the visual language associated with animals\, cultures or places; a creature’s role in the larger ecosystem; and a desire to experiment with different compositional elements. My primary goal is to capture the unique spirit and personality of an animal using a combination of abstract expressionism\, color\, line\, patterns\, symbols and texture. I began my career as a graphic designer and I still often use an iPad or Photoshop to compose preliminary sketches or play with color and compositional elements before implementing them in a painting. However\, my best work emerges organically\, in the midst of the physical act of painting when I find my animal subject guiding my thoughts and decisions. My finished pieces reflect my own interpretations of an animal’s spirit as well as cultural and artistic styles that inspire me. \nMy work is available at Viewpoints Gallery in Los Altos\, California and belongs to private collections across the United States\, France and Norway. It has appeared in Southwest Art Magazine\, Palette Magazine\, the Palo Alto Weekly and the Salinas Californian newspaper. In addition\, my work has earned awards in Fusion Art’s “5th Anniversary Art Exhibition” (Best in Show)\,” “5th Annual Artists’ Choice Exhibition\,” and “Into the Wild International Art Exhibition”; the Pacific Art League’s national juried “Fur\, Fins and Feathers” exhibition and “95th Anniversary Exhibition”; as well as Redwood City’s Spring and Fall Art Shows.\nEmail: amyrattnerart@gmail.com\nWebsite: www.amyrattnerart.com\nFacebook: AmyRattnerArt \n  \nTeresa Ruzzo\n \nLandscape\, particularly the California landscape is my muse. I use soft pastels to convey my love of nature on location\, immersed in all that is happening around me and in my studio\, where my imagination can roam more freely. Painting for me is always about exploring the natural world and the interior world. Pastel is the perfect medium – spontaneous\, tactile and intuitive. \nMy landscapes are in private collections in the US and Europe. I am a signature member of the Pastel Society of the West Coast and maintain a studio at Art Bias in San Carlos. More of my work may be viewed at QD Gallery\, Stanford Mall\, Palo Alto\, STUDIO Gallery\, SF (studiogallerysf.com) and on my website (teresaruzzo.com.) \nEmail: teresa.ruzzo@gmail.com\nWebsite: www.teresaruzzo.com\nInstagram: teresa.ruzzo \n  \nTerry Sand\n \nMy mission is to share through my playful art the fun and energy of the creative process. I use improvisational theater and modern dance techniques to encourage my mind to explore and bring to life characters in imaginative locations having random experiences. There is a particular figure with a stylistic face that energizes my work. As I explore this lady’s adventures\, she guides me through paint\, mixed media\, pen and ink into her world. I love being with her\, as she is a metaphor for myself as a comedian\, and I think from a past life as a traveling circus performer. As I experiment with a variety of techniques the lady reappears in the ever changing ebbs and flows of color. The diversity of playful scenarios keeps me engaged and entertained.\nCreating art provides me with more than a glimpse into the magic of the artistic process. In my art\, I seek to integrate a diversity of techniques from painting to mixed media\, and pen and ink. A driving force behind my art is my decades of experience in improvisational theater and comedy. My improvisational mind encourages me to bring to life imaginary characters in random situations.\nMy muse is a particular lady with a stylized face who appears throughout my work. Through her adventures my stylized lady guides me to improvise new and tantalizing ideas. I love being with her as she is a metaphor for myself as a comedian and I think from a past life as a traveling circus performer.\nIt is my mission to share this fun and magic through the sharing of my art. \nEmail: Mahimahi1902@gmail.com\nWebsite: Terrysand.com\nInstagram: Terrysand6565 \n  \nYucali Seki\n  \nI find ways to visualize and capture the essence of moments/experiences in life that are precious to me through the practice of art making. I’m deeply inspired by Nature and by Buddhist teaching\, and by Japanese and World Literature\, by Music\, and by the beautiful yet strong and balanced movements/practice of Wushu. Each painting takes me through a journey of its own and helps me to explore\, experience (both joy and frustration…much like life itself) and understand what it means to keep going beyond one’s expectation or intentions. \nThe fluidity of calligraphy works well to capture the movements I find in Nature and the energy I feel when I watch and train Wushu (as a martial artist). I also use Japanese writing (Zen words and teaching) as a medium in my work\, for their flow-full shapes and the negative spaces to help create multiple spacial depths in my paintings. On my canvas paintings\, I build up layers of bold or at times subtle colors on various painting mediums so that viewers will experience the physicality and presence of the painting. I hope to trigger an emotional bond between my art and its viewers. \nEmail: yucalisart@gmail.com\nWebsite: www.yucalis.com \n  \nAmber Smith\n  \nPassionate about the environment and those that live in it; Amber J Smith has created the Endangered Collection\, which uses recycled materials to explore the condition of being on the verge of extinction from different perspectives. In our contemporary society danger can come from multiple sources and people can be at the same time victims and perpetrators. I began my research reflecting on the ecological impact of plastic use\, using my art practice to show how our planet\, and those living on it\, are facing a great danger. I then move my attention to social injustice\, addressing the wealth gap and highlighting how some people\, in this case homeless people\, are marginalized\, forgotten and discarded. Lastly\, I dove deep into the personal sphere showing the impact of contemporary life on one’s mental health. All this different stages of exploration aims to raise awareness towards the threats that our contemporary lifestyle poses to our environment\, our social fabric and our personal wellbeing at the point that the whole humankind is becoming an endangered species. The endangered collection wants to inspire the audience in taking action against those threats\, acting as a community to preserve vulnerable people and protect the environment. \nEmail: as.meraki.art@gmail.com\nWebsite: Www.asmerakiartstudio.com\nInstagram: As.meraki.art \n  \nGreta Waterman\n \nMy medium is oil on canvas. I like to weave my colors throughout the canvas to give balance and composition. My themes are women and nature. I have been described as a fauvist with cubist tendencies reminiscent of stained glass. Since landing in California\, plein aire has influenced me. The Pacific is so inspiring with its rugged landscapes and the sea’s relentless energy. I think my recent experimentation with oil and resin captures that! \nGreta Stapf Waterman \nEmail: gsw222@gmail.com\nWebsite: www.artbygreta.org\nInstagram: Gretathepaintingrealtor \n  \nNanette Wylde\n \nI am a reflective thinker and maker whose studio work is a response to specific phenomena which are generally external to myself. The resultant work is interdisciplinary with a strong focus on narrative and storytelling. \nMy process often begins from an obsessive thought\, as in trying to understand/make sense of a given phenomena; a string of words\, perhaps similar to an ear worm; a concept\, or concern which I attempt to satisfy with both research and making. \nMy most recent works reflect on issues of sustainability\, the history and practice of natural resource extraction\, global mass extinctions\, finding meaning\, and discerning truth in today’s world. Although I work in the media best suited for a given project\, I think of myself as a printmaker\, and my process often results in artist books which include original text. \nMy interests include: language\, personality\, difference\, beliefs\, systems\, ideas\, movement\, reflection\, identity\, perceptions\, structures\, stories\, socialization\, definitions\, context\, memory\, experience\, change\, the natural world\, and residue. \nRecent exhibitions include the de Young Open 2023 which featured one from my series “Milagros for Times Like These.” \nEmail: nanwylde@preneo.org\nWebsite: preneo.org\nInstagram: nanwylde \n  \nFederica Armstrong\nMolly Finn\nJennifer Kelley\nMarianna Kiraly\nColleen Mirassou\nEllen Howard\nCheryl Selman\nInna Zalutovsky \nSee more events at Art Bias \n\nSee other interesting events in San Carlos. SUMMARY:Discover the Spirit of Shodō: Japanese Calligraphy Workshop with Yucali Seki & Hosui Sato
DESCRIPTION:Discover the Spirit of Shodō: Japanese Calligraphy Workshop with Yucali Seki & Hosui Sato\nIf you’ve ever been captivated by the fluid elegance of Japanese calligraphy\, here’s your chance to dive into this beautiful tradition firsthand. On Wednesday\, May 14\, 2025\, at 5:00 PM\, join us at Art Bias in San Carlos for a truly unique experience: the Japanese Calligraphy Workshop\, where tradition meets creativity in an inspiring and inclusive setting. \n \nAbout This Event\nExplore the art of shodō—the Japanese way of writing—as you engage in a hands-on workshop led by artist Yucali Seki and calligrapher Hosui Sato\, visiting all the way from Ōmura City\, Nagasaki\, Japan. Whether you’re a beginner or have experience with brushwork\, this event is designed for all levels\, creating a space where participants can learn\, express\, and connect through this timeless art form. \nDuring this immersive session\, you’ll gain an introduction to the basics of brush technique\, how to control ink flow\, and how to express yourself using Kanji\, Hiragana\, and Katakana characters—each imbued with elegance\, history\, and meaning. You’ll walk away not only with new skills\, but also with a deeper appreciation for the philosophical and artistic depth behind Japanese calligraphy. \nMeet the Artists\nHousui Sato – The Spirit of Tradition and Innovation\nAlso known as Mr. Housui\, Hosui Sato is a distinguished calligrapher from Ōmura City\, known for his dynamic and expressive brushwork that brings characters to life. His career spans sake label design\, store branding\, and product packaging\, as well as traditional brush pen instruction and “Jikaki” (artistic handwriting). Housui has performed live calligraphy in Tokyo\, Kyushu\, and at powerful cultural landmarks like Urakami Cathedral and Nagasaki Peace Park. \nMore than just a calligrapher\, Housui is an artist in motion—his collaborations with painters\, musicians\, and designers showcase his passion for pushing the boundaries of tradition\, breathing new life into ancient techniques. His visit to San Carlos marks a significant cultural exchange\, bridging Japanese and American communities through shared artistry. \nWhile in San Carlos\, Mr. Housui will also participate in the Blossoms mural ribbon-cutting event on May 15\, and perform live-action calligraphy at the San Carlos Centennial celebration on May 17\, making this workshop part of a larger celebration of creativity and international friendship. \n \n \nYucali – Bridging Cultures Through Art\nYucali\, a multidisciplinary Japanese artist based in the San Francisco Bay Area\, brings a modern\, fluid approach to traditional art forms. A graduate of UC Berkeley with a degree in Art and a minor in Literature\, Yucali draws on Zen philosophy\, world literature\, nature\, and Wushu (a Chinese martial art) to inform her highly personal and poetic visual language. \nDeeply involved in community art initiatives\, Yucali is a lead mentor for the Art Bias Creative Youth Mentorship Program\, now in its third year. She’s also taught with One Step Beyond and HIP Housing\, and has led mural projects across the Bay Area. Her most recent public work\, the ～Blossoms～ International Friendship Mural\, is a stunning collaboration with Mr. Housui\, celebrating the sister cities of San Carlos and Ōmura City. \nThe mural\, which incorporates Mr. Housui’s calligraphy\, symbolizes the cultural exchange and enduring friendship between two cities across the Pacific Ocean—one ink stroke at a time. \nWhy You Should Attend\n\n\nExperience authentic shodō with expert guidance from internationally recognized artists \n\n\nCreate your own calligraphy artwork using traditional materials \n\n\nConnect with a creative community in a welcoming environment \n\n\nBe part of a larger cultural celebration that includes public art\, performance\, and shared stories \n\n\nThis workshop isn’t just about technique—it’s about storytelling\, mindfulness\, and connection. Whether you’re looking to try something new\, rekindle a passion for Japanese arts\, or explore your own cultural identity through writing\, this event is a powerful space to begin or continue your journey. \nMark Your Calendar\nJapanese Calligraphy Workshop📅 Date: Wednesday\, May 14\, 2025🕔 Time: 5:00 PM📍 Location: Art Bias\, San Carlos\, CA🎨 All materials provided. SUMMARY:Crafternoon: Craft Stick "Flower Pots" – A Blooming Good Time After School
DESCRIPTION:Crafternoon: Craft Stick “Flower Pots” – A Blooming Good Time After School\nSpring is in full swing\, and what better way to celebrate the season than with some colorful\, hands-on creativity? Join us for a delightful afternoon of crafting at the San Carlos Library on Thursday\, May 15\, 2025\, from 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM\, for Crafternoon: Craft Stick “Flower Pots.” \n \nWhether you’re an experienced young artist or just looking for a fun and relaxing way to unwind after school\, Crafternoon is the perfect place to explore your imagination and enjoy creative play. This week’s project is all about flowers that never fade—using simple craft supplies like sticks\, paper\, and glue to create flower pots that are bright\, cheerful\, and completely handmade. \nWhat is Crafternoon?\nCrafternoon is a weekly after-school art program designed to give kids a fun\, low-pressure environment where they can create\, explore\, and have fun with a variety of materials. Each session offers something new—sometimes we highlight a featured artist\, sometimes we explore a cultural celebration\, and other times we let kids dive into free-form art exploration. \nNo matter the theme\, Crafternoon is always about encouraging creativity\, trying new things\, and making space for artistic expression. \nThis week\, we’re bringing out the craft sticks\, colorful paper\, markers\, and glue for a project that’s perfect for spring—and for those who love flowers but might not love the mess of soil and watering cans. \nThis Week’s Project: Craft Stick “Flower Pots”\nCan sticks and paper create flowers we can enjoy all year? Absolutely! \nAt this Thursday’s Crafternoon\, kids will get the chance to build their own miniature flower pots using craft sticks for the pot base and bright paper flowers for the blooms. This project is easy enough for young children to enjoy\, but open-ended enough for older kids to get extra creative with their designs. \nParticipants will have access to a wide variety of crafting supplies to decorate their flower pots\, including: \n\n\nCraft sticks (plain and colored) \n\n\nBright construction paper \n\n\nFoam shapes \n\n\nPom-poms and stickers \n\n\nMarkers\, crayons\, and washi tape \n\n\nGlue and child-safe scissors \n\n\nOnce the flower pots are assembled\, kids can use their paper flowers to decorate the pot however they like. From tulips to daisies\, every creation is a chance to explore color\, pattern\, and imagination. \nAnd the best part? These flowers will never wilt! \nA Creative Way to Unwind\nWe know that school can be demanding\, and sometimes what kids need most at the end of the day is a little time to decompress\, express themselves\, and make something with their hands. That’s where Crafternoon comes in. \nThis program is designed to be relaxing\, playful\, and judgment-free. There’s no “right” or “wrong” way to make a craft stick flower pot—just your way. Kids can follow along with an example or completely do their own thing. The emphasis is on creativity\, not perfection. \nCrafternoon is a great opportunity for kids to: \n\n\nBuild confidence through creative expression \n\n\nPractice fine motor skills \n\n\nLearn about shapes\, colors\, and design \n\n\nSpend time in a safe\, supportive community space \n\n\nTake a break from screens and structured learning \n\n\nWhether your child is a budding artist or just looking to try something new\, they’re welcome at Crafternoon. \nParents Welcome\, Too!\nParents and caregivers are encouraged to stay\, watch\, or even participate! Crafting together can be a wonderful bonding experience and gives families a chance to connect in a fun\, relaxed setting. Plus\, you’ll love seeing your child’s face light up when they show you their finished flower pot creation. \nNo prior experience or special skills are needed—just bring your imagination and get ready to have some fun. \nEvent Details at a Glance\n🗓️ Date: Thursday\, May 15\, 2025🕞 Time: 3:30 PM – 4:30 PM📍 Location: San Carlos Library🎨 Activity: Crafternoon: Craft Stick “Flower Pots”💬 Description: Need some relaxing fun after school? SUMMARY:Experience the Beauty of Japanese Flower Art at Our Ikebana Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Experience the Beauty of Japanese Flower Art at Our Ikebana Workshop\nAre you looking for a peaceful yet creatively stimulating activity this spring? Step into the world of Japanese flower arrangement with our upcoming Ikebana Workshop\, happening Friday\, May 16\, 2025\, from 2:00PM to 3:30PM in beautiful San Carlos. Whether you’re a curious beginner or someone with a few arrangements under your belt\, this workshop is the perfect chance to immerse yourself in an ancient art form that celebrates nature\, mindfulness\, and simplicity. \n \nWhat is Ikebana?\nIkebana is not just about putting flowers in a vase—it’s an art form deeply rooted in Japanese tradition\, aesthetics\, and philosophy. At its core\, Ikebana emphasizes minimalism and balance. It brings together branches\, flowers\, and leaves to create elegant and often symbolic designs that highlight artistic lines\, colors\, and mass. \nUnlike Western floral arrangements\, which often focus on abundance and symmetry\, ikebana leans into the natural shapes of plants and empty space. The result is something serene and poetic—a quiet conversation between form and emptiness\, between nature and human creativity. \n \nMeet Your Instructor: Gloria Lee\nWe’re thrilled to welcome Gloria Lee as our workshop instructor. Gloria is a beloved and respected figure in the Bay Area’s ikebana community\, with a wealth of experience and a passion for teaching. She has been teaching and demonstrating ikebana in the Bay Area since 2007\, sharing her knowledge with students of all skill levels. \nOver the years\, Gloria’s striking arrangements have been featured in numerous flower shows throughout the region. Her work has even appeared at the prestigious Bouquets to Art exhibit held annually at the San Francisco De Young Museum\, where top floral designers reinterpret famous artworks through their creations. Her attention to detail and deep appreciation for the traditions of ikebana shine through in every piece she creates—and in the way she teaches others to find their own artistic voice. \nWhat You’ll Learn\nDuring this 90-minute workshop\, Gloria will introduce participants to the foundational principles of ikebana. You’ll learn: \n\n\nThe three main elements used in ikebana arrangements \n\n\nHow to use space and asymmetry to create harmony \n\n\nThe importance of line and form over sheer volume \n\n\nBasic techniques for trimming\, shaping\, and placing each botanical element \n\n\nHow to approach flower arranging as a form of personal expression and meditation \n\n\nEach participant will have hands-on time to create their own arrangement using provided materials. Gloria will offer guidance and personalized tips as you work\, helping you to see the beauty in simplicity and encouraging you to develop your own style. \nWho Can Join?\nThis workshop is open to all levels of experience. Whether you’re completely new to flower arranging or have dabbled in ikebana before\, you’ll find the session both educational and deeply satisfying. Gloria’s patient and thoughtful teaching style ensures that everyone walks away with both a beautiful arrangement and a greater appreciation for the art. \nNo prior knowledge or special tools are needed—just bring an open mind and a love for nature and design. All materials\, including fresh flowers and branches\, will be provided. \nWhy Try Ikebana?\nIn our fast-paced world\, it’s easy to overlook the quiet joy that comes from working with your hands and being fully present in the moment. Ikebana offers a unique way to reconnect with nature\, cultivate inner calm\, and express creativity. \nMany who practice ikebana find it to be a meditative process. The focus required to select\, cut\, and place each stem with intention helps to slow down the mind and bring about a sense of clarity and peace. Plus\, it’s incredibly rewarding to see how something as simple as a single branch or bloom can become a work of art. \nWhether you’re looking to learn a new skill\, meet fellow art and nature lovers\, or simply take a break from your daily routine\, our ikebana workshop offers a refreshing and enriching experience. \nEvent Details\n📅 Date: Friday\, May 16\, 2025🕑 Time: 2:00PM – 3:30PM📍 Location: San Carlos (specific venue details provided upon registration)🎟️ Registration: Spaces are limited\, so be sure to reserve your spot early! \nAll materials will be provided\, and you’ll leave the workshop with your very own ikebana creation. \n\nReady to Join Us?\nDon’t miss this chance to explore the elegance and mindfulness of Japanese flower arranging. Join Gloria Lee and fellow ikebana enthusiasts in San Carlos for an inspiring afternoon of art\, nature\, and community. \nReserve your spot today and discover the simple\, timeless beauty of ikebana. \n\nSee other interesting events in San Carlos.
